Tried a new shelter set up the other day. Anyone else use anything like this and have any tips on improving it?

Perhaps it’s my viewpoint but it looks like the foot end is higher than the head. Is itcand is there a reason you did it like that? I feel like it would make rain fall off pool near your head.

Also what bag is that? Is there a sleep pad or ground cloth under you? How warm is that at night with the cold ground?

Might just be a dodgy picture because it was level when I slept under it. Bag is an Osprey Talon 33. Had a roll mate between the sleeping bag and the bivi bag to keep me off the ground which kept me warm but I was quite lucky with the weather

My tent weights a ton, I also have a tarp but it has some stupid woodland camo and a fucking eyelet right in the middle of it, regardless of it I will probably be forced to give it a serious try or be forced to spend a couple hundred euros on a decent tent if I go ahead with a summer trip that I have been on the works for a while now.

Also I'm paranoid about ticks and would prefer to not impregnate my gear in chemicals so there's that too.

I was wondering the same thing, and what about other bugs at night? I've only gone camping a few times in my life but when I have it's always been in a fully enclosed tent, there's just so many ground spiders and shit, at least that was my experience camping in Ocala. I live in TN now, is it less buggy at night?

I think it just depends on where you live.
I simply could not tarp tent where I live, even if my bivvy had a big net face mesh. Far too many ticks, Zika and West Nile mosquitoes, fire ants, and spiders.

I think I would feel safe in more arid environments. I wouldn’t do it in very foresty areas and especially not on a pile of leaves like that other anon posted.

I hiked the whole AT with no dedicated bug protection other than a head net. I didn't find a single tick dug in on me. I did have a ground sheet, I have heard that most ticks don't travel far horizontally. They tend only to climb up and down. I also had a sleeping bag liner that was treated with permethrin. Beyond that the only bugs that bothered me were the mosquitos and my head handleded them more than well enough. As long as you can handle the sound of them being close to your head that is.

I think by this stage I have well over 1000 nights in open shelters like tarps and find a head net plenty of protection. Bear in mind that I don't tend to spend much time in camp. My trips are very much focused on hiking so I am normally moving the vast majority of the time. I eat before making camp as well so can pick a bug free(ish) spot to eat. Then when I get to camp it's a case of pitch my shelter if I am using is and go to sleep. I also don't eat breakfast at camp so it's the same deal. Wake up, break camp, leave. Then stop to eat when I find a nice spot.

That stretchy cord is a bad idea. It will make it impossible to tension your tarp properly. A flappy tarp is an unhappy tarp. You want that sucker tightttt.

I was told since my tarp is a sylpoly it will stretch and the stretch cord will prevent a loose tarp through the night

yeah, that's not going to work. I have never seen anyone use strechy cord on their guys. Either use linelocks or an easy to tension knot system so you can adjust your tarp quickly. silpoly doesn't sag as much as silnylon afaik.

I spend a minimum of 1/3 of the year hiking. That combined with weekend trips and testing stuff in the garden over a number of years adds up. Maybe 1000 nights its pushing but I tarp camp a lot. hah.

I'm making a simple tent this week for backpacking Myanmar and need some advice.

Usually I use a thin plastic tarp and a ground mat, but I don't think it would be suitable because it would be very hard to mosquito proof and the ground could become muddy

I'm not sure which design of tarp shelter will be best for me, an A frame would be too heavy and I don't need the space

I think a single pole bivibag cornet would be ideal, because its light and I can seal it with a single piece of mosquito netting.
But I can't work out the dimensions because maths isn't my strong suit, I'm about 5.5 foot and need space for a 75l hiking bag (also my pillow)

I took a hammock and diamond tarp two years ago in the region and it was a disaster, it was impossible to keep my bag dry, water ran into my hammock even with precautions and like 50 fucking tiger mosquitoes bit me through the hammock material.

By using an appropriate sleeping bag and mat for the conditions. If there's a wind then you can use a lower/different pitch.

Bivvy bag, sleeping bag, sleep mat and tarp is all you need for most conditions. Bungee cords and pegs make setting up really easy. Just keep the tarp low to the ground. I did that in he army for years in all kinds of conditions and never had any issues.

It's worth mentioning my tarps get receive heavy use because I'm a dirty vagrant and I hitchhike around and do seasonal farm work 3/4 of the year.
