Not him, but yes. It's easier than using a fork. Noodles too. I also used only a $5 carp rod all last year.
It's cheap, easy to do competently, fits on the back of my motorbike. Ate nothing but bass with rice all of last June.
Now I have a job, bought a pole with a reel on it, can fish for fun. But I still take the plain stick to the highlands once in a while. Would really like to snag a larger-than-pan trout this time.

Tenkara makes sense for people who want to backpack first and fish second. If you're going fishing first and can afford it, get a long 3-weight nymphing rod and fly reel. You can fish every other type of conventional fly with it, including swinging wet flies from the long rod, aka tenkara.

All my /out/ing activities are backpacking first, with secondary activities like canyoneering, fishing, etc second. For those activities it has to be minimal gear. A plain stick and line is perfect for me, but I can see how a bass fisher would hate it.

It sucks. This used to be the comfiest board on 4chan. With a wide range of of likes and dislike and people enjoying things in different price ranges. It’s not like that person is being “tricked” into buying an exspensive product. It’s the same with any other asinine hobby. If I really enjoy something, I’m going to be the “idiot” to spend my hard earned money any way I damn well please because what I bought give me pleasure that may seem arbitrary to someone else.

And fuck, sometimes people buy exspensive shit just to buy it. They can afford to flaunt and god bless em.
