Depends on where you do it. People have found Kar 98K rifles in the bottom of ponds and lakes in Germany , in almost perfect condition minus the rotting wood. A friend of my mother's does magnet fishing and found a lot of Roman coins this way. You can find lots of value with patience, and there's no "point" to it. You do it for its own sake.

Rust is an excellent substrate to grow tetanus because it's anaerobic and rusting iron consumes oxygen producing an anaerobic environment within the rust.

you're right rust doesn't cause tetanus, but I wouldn't say it has nothing to do with it. It's a particularly good way to both get a puncture wound and have tetanus spores delivered into the wound. Using dirty needles and being bitten by animals are a couple other good ways to get it.

I think it also depends on what the item is and what the crime was. If it's a murder weapon I doubt they give it back. But if it was an item stolen like a phone or car, I'm sure they would.

I believe when it comes to lost items if you find it and hand it over to the police they'll hold on to it to let the original owner claim it but will turn it over to you if they don't within a few weeks. With things that are lost in a lake its probably unlikely the owner will claim it so they may just let you keep it. With guns they'll try to contact whoever the gun was registered to under the serial number and see if it was reported lost or stolen. If it was reported stolen then they might check for finger prints and test it if it was fired or anything. If there's no serial number they'll probably destroy it. I have my doubts they'd let a random guy take it though
