How many trees can you identify in your area? I can only do a few so far. What's it like knowing every species in the woods at a glance?

I don’t know nearly as much as I should be able too, but I’m always learning. In my opinion it’s a great skill to have. If we are talking just about trees and not other plants, then I can only identify basic stuff, so far that’s oak, maple, willow, cedar, pine, myrtle, pecan, and ash.

Grew up on a nursery, but have been away from it for a couple of decades. I like to try to remember the Latin names as my game. I like going to the local arboretum where they have like, 10 different kinds of everything and seeing what the differences are between species or cultivars.

I've been thinking about getting a book specifically about regional plants.
I'm pretty bad at identifying--especially when the leaves haven't come in.
However, it is very neat to pay attention to the different plants. You start to realize that there are totally varied ecosystems and micro-climates within your area.
I mostly just know about oak, maple, black birch, grey birch, white pine, and ash. There are many deciduous and evergreens that I'll probably always be confused about.

It's hard to say exactly, but basically some combination of temperatures, elevation, sunlight, etc will support different plant life. The plants you'd consistently see at 400' will be different than the ones you see at 1400' (for trees, heavy oak may give way to pine). On a twisty trail there will be sections with significantly more greening in spring than others, probably because of sunlight (or more noticeably, in winter, one area will have a frozen ground and another will not, again because of sunlight). And of course the presence of water changes things quite a bit.

I know all of the trees in my area and most scientific names. I know about 100 species of plants and some scientific names. It's extremely fun but it's hard to get people to go for walks and just stop and look at plants with you. My gf will let me talk at her and stop to look at stuff. Getting yourself a good i.d. guide is necessary to learn plants but there's so many shitty ones that it's really hard to finally find one that works well. The only other way is to have someone teach you. I learned from a combination of both.

Many keys can be used to identify a species (this applies to most multi-cellular beings), and for trees the main ones are: leaf (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_leaf_morphology), bark, total high, general form of the tree, cones, flowers, ecology...

I do this too, this makes it easy to discuss plants in different languages instead of using vernacular/local names. For me knowing it's an oak isn't enough, I need to distinguish between quercus robur, quercus petraea and quecus pubescens. But then again it's my job.
