Well, your choice of where to move depends on a lot of factors:
1) Do you want a small town or a decent sized city such as Denver or Albuquerque? There's more and better-paying jobs in a city but otherwise you have a gadzillion small towns.
2) What kind of outdoorzy stuff do you like to do? Mountain hiking in Colorado is entirely different from canyoneering in Utah.
3) How much do you like winter activities like skiing and snowboarding?

Figure out what's important to you and your selection will be much easier.

I would go to Nevada or New Mexico. Lots of govt land, low cost of living And low taxes. Iirc nv is over 75% public lands and the basin and range country is awesome.

I'm a 6th generation Texan and I wouldn't recommend coming here if you like getting /out/. While its beautiful Texas is 99% private. The west is the best for /out/door activities.

OP just said he is leaning north, but I'll throw this out there anyway. Living in the western part of the state has its advantages. You are a short drive from NM forest, skiing, and mountains one way and 9 hours from the Gulf Coast another way and 6 hours from Big Bend NP on US 385. Muleshoe NWR is close, as are several lakes. And there's NO state income tax like there is over in the Land of Entrapment.
