I'm no stranger to /out/ but I've never used ferro rod, so I got one out of curiosity.

After some more experiments & watching more vids I actually managed to start a fire (I know, I was holding it too far away), but it still was harder than using a match or a bic.
I really see no point for those tools except for larping.
Survival? Waterproof? BiC/matches in plastic bag still beat that in every way.
Lighter, same size, and a bic can always be dried.
Oh wait, but it LOOKS COOL (if it works). That's probably the only plus. Yay! Sparkies!
Starting a fire is always about administering heat for a prolonged period of time, magnesium sparks burn for a split of a second in high temp that's why it's even possible to start fire with them with a single stroke.
But physics wise, its still less effective than literally any other popular way of administering heat. Prove me wrong.
I'm not the kind of person to blame failure on the tool, but pic related is what I used, except its an aluminum rod with small ferro rod on one side embedded into it.
