Too big and lighters with o rings have existed since at least zippo has existed. The problem with those lights is they end up being more complex than a zippo. And o ring cases for a zippo exist but again make it too big.

OP... zippos honestly suck. My biggest problem is that they run out of juice within 1-2 weeks of filling. The only thing that's nice about them, is if you are in a 'survival' situation, you have a spark with a flint and wheel (which you can get out of a bic, clipper, any wheel lighter really).

They're a very cool novelty, and some people absolutely love them! But realistically, if I have a lighter, I want to shove it in a bag, pocket, car, etc. and have it work every time. I don't smoke, so I don't depend on lighters all the time, and I don't want to spend any time constantly maintaining, or in my case, spending money on lighter fluid that will just go 'up in smoke'.

I saw a deal at a store, buy 5 for the price of 3, and just shoved them everywhere. I have 2 in my EDC bag, two in my car, and one home. In the rare case I need them, I use them, put them back, and repeat.

Honestly theyre are a bit of a novelty, more so than a zippo (except zippos are based). If you just want to smoke get a cheap pack of lighters for quid and for survival get a striker or rope lighter.

Where almost every other lighter requires a special fuel, in a survival situation the Zippo can operate on almost any fuel which will ignite when exposed to a flame. Although not recommended by Zippo, several users have tested various alternative Zippo lighter fuels. The list below demonstrates some of the tested alternative fuels for a survival situation and ranks them from the likely best to worst.

All wick lighter fuels (Zippo, Ronsonol, etc.)
Camp Fuel (naphtha)
Some Paint Thinners (naphtha)
Rubbing Alcohol (isopropyl alcohol)
Everclear / Grain Alcohol (ethyl alcohol aka “moonshine”)
Kerosene
Cologne
Diesel Fuel
Jet Propellant (JP – 4)
Lamp Oil
Gasoline (dangerous but does work)

One of the most significant notes of his testing was validation that Camp Fuel, which many of us have already tested in Zippos, works as well as wick lighter fluids. I have noticed camp fuel typically does have a smellier burn than some of the more refined wick lighter fuels. From a disaster preparedness perspective, you should have a low tech, manual pressurized camp stove and at least a gallon of camp fuel on hand anyway. However, it is good to know that one gallon of fuel could also be used as a nearly infinite supply of Zippo lighter refills as well.
The flints on the Zippo are very good compared to most other disposable lighter flints. When using a Zippo to start tinder when the fluid is dry, simply move the wick over to the inside and loosely place your tender in the wick cage. If you have nice, dry and light tinder, perhaps some of that cotton battening from the lighter itself, would start right up.

The Zippo lighter has some unique benefits as a survival tool such as a near indestructible case, function unaffected by altitude, easy maintenance and repair, no-hands burning, signaling/mirror if you have a polished model, and simple functioning.

I always carry a couple disposable butane lighters in my bag with ferrocerium rods. High-end, windproof micro-torches are without a doubt the fastest firemaking tools available, however they go through fuel quickly. Then what? In a long-term survival situation, the problem occurs when a refill is needed and this is where the Zippo becomes the preferable firemaking tool.

Ferro rods are an indispensable back up option, however a lighter will always be quicker and simpler fire making option. If a catastrophic event occurs, the Zippo becomes a barter-able item. Until then you can slip one of the most well recognized and coolest fire making tools in your pocket all for about $20, for the “just in case” we hope will never happen whether on the streets or in the woods.

The comments about the wick and filler aren't unique to Zippo. That's true of almost any lighter that isn't a modern a bic.

This is is plain wrong. It's not cotton. It's rayon and it doesn't burn well. And cotton is shit to use as filler.

I think it's a bit much to do that and makes moisture a problem. Some higher quality lighters come with carbon felt material but I'm not really sure what benefit that has besides better heat resistance.

Thanks again for demonstrating how insufferable people like you are. You are a doormat for other to walk all over. That's why you attempt to be "useful" with your lighter, your knife. Those tiny lighters suck. Very little fuel and the ones I have tried throw very little sparks. Wasted money on some titanium garbage and the thing has trouble lighting in the house let alone with a breeze. Worse is trying to get the metal liner out to refuel it.

I don't smoke anymore but I still like to keep mine in handy when I travel because there's just something about their design that would look in place with the average minimalist edc of a typical 80s/90s/early-00s pre-smartphone era average dude. A mini bic is nice to have. They generally work but have limitations. They are garbage at high altitude and extreme cold. They can also be very hard to get lit once they get wet. Also being plastic they can crack so not the best for pocket.

A full size Bic is honestly the best pipe lighter imo. Lasts for a good while (about a month for me) - because pipe smoking needs a flame longer per light and more frequent lighting, most if not all others need replacing too frequently. I have found refillables (clippers etc) don't have a strong enough flame to get into the bowl reliably. I have a pipe zippo too but it needs refilling every 2 days and you are huffing a ton of fuel.

A Bic is one of the best butane lighters for a variety of reasons. Easy to find and cheap.
Other disposable lighters are not as well made, their valves are more prone to irregular flames which can be quite dangerous.

Bics can last for many years and still work.

Clippy is a decent lighter that is similar to a Bic, but you can refill it and change the flint.

I've seen a few people mention them leaking along with the bicycle innertube wrap, but not a wrap for the insert. After refilling, wrap the insert with one or two wraps of electrical tape before putting it back in (whatever fits when trying to re-insert it). Makes it last a lot longer before drying out. Not sure exactly how many wraps you need; it's been a few years since I last did it. My only problem with that method is that electrical tape sucks and will start sliding around after a while, especially because you're basically using it as an o-ring to keep a solvent in a container, which starts ruining the adhesive. Combine both wraps if you really feel like it and it's waterproof and lasts a while.

I wanted to like the Zippo, but the hinge on the flip cover feels flimsy, it needs to be refilled often, and the fluid imparts a bad taste when smoking. BICs are better despite being disposable. I dropped 80 bones on this butane Kiribi and its been going strong for about a year. Only needs to be refilled like once a month and has an adjustable soft flame. It isn't wind resistant though.

Not true, Zippos are famous for being able to use odd fuels

Although not recommended by Zippo, many alternate fuels can be used. This is a tested list, ranked from most suitable to less suitable.

All wick lighter fuels (Zippo, Ronsonol, etc.)
Camp Fuel (naphtha) works well, but smellier than
Some Paint Thinners (naphtha)
Rubbing Alcohol (isopropyl alcohol)
Everclear / Grain Alcohol (ethyl alcohol aka “moonshine”)
Kerosene
Cologne
Diesel Fuel
Jet Propellant (JP – 4)
Lamp Oil
Gasoline (dangerous but does work)

There are other advantages as well.

Very similar. Some old Zippos have a worn out insert, but others have sat in a drawer for 30 years.
An old one in good condition is just as good as a new one.

Something has to fit between them to light it up well. Useful for a cig but not a lot else. It tends to leave behind residue at the contact points. This can cause it to make a high pitch sound or just an very annoying noise overall. They're surprisingly easy to make. I have a little stovetop that I made out of the bottom of a coke can. Just melt sulpher powder on it and coat the sticks with beeswax. Then you can just get a little droplet of the sulfur on the end of each side. Whole process takes about 3 minutes to get going
