I want to start climbing mountains. The easy kind you can just hike up. What kind of shoes should I get.

Trail runners

They're breath easier and dry way faster than traditional hiking shoes or boots

i think ankle support is only needed on shoes with thick heels. not nearly as much torque when shoes are pretty flat.

Probably something with your input of Dr schools and either hiking boots or trail shoes as others suggested. I go for 2 miles with my cut up scholls and basketball shoes. Not gonna go longer unless you go real comfy or barefoot

I have a pair of US Air Force boots like the ones pictured, they're really high up and have a super thick sole which means you can walk through anything. I've had water all the way to the top of the boot and my foot was still dry.

As someone who was in the military please take this advice:
1. Issue boots are shit and you are doing your body a disservice by wearing them
2. Rothco is a shitty knock off of issued boots.
Buy some actual hiking boots.

Any pair of shoes with good treads will do you fine. If you are in a particularly loose rocky area like PA you might want the support and durability given from boots.

The only military boots that were okay for hiking that I have used, were the khyber pass boots by outdoor research, but ONLY AFTER they were broken in. My favorites have been the Merrel Moabs, which lost waterproofing after 2 years of daily use, and the Salomon X ultra Mid, which I've been hiking in for 1.5 - 2 years

Am I the only one shitlisting Merrell?

2 years ago I bought a pair of their shoes to complement my clunky Moab shoes that were great but wore out (750+ miles). Now their entire shoe lineup has gone the way of Nike with tiered pricing and fucked up sizes.

Like some Chinese kids are guessing the 'cheap shoe' sizes and the rest of the nicer shoes with the colorful Vibram shit are still half decent.

Fuck Merrell, a great pair of shoes for $75 was discontinued for some tiered Jewish pricing shit. Bought a $130 pair of Solomons instead out of principle.

Well, I've hiked in thongs for a bet. It's not the greatest but you really don't need anything more than a good pair of runners. I usually get about 500-600km out of a pair.

Which is it?
for hiking without a heavy pack, shoes don't matter much as long as they fit, have some profile and are waterproof.
For hiking with a heavy pack,you need shoes with hard soles and little to no dampening and good ankle support.
For climbing on the other hand, you need to have somewhat soft soles and as little ankle support as possible so you can fit your feet into whatever position you need.

Nope, trail runners are absolutely fine. Unless you plan on doing scree running, but even scree running is possible with a pair of trail runners. You just need to be more careful.
Also, go for non goretex-lined shoes unless you know you will be hiking in bad weather/snow. The goretex versions are always more expensive and invariably let your feet breathe less.

Want to piggyback on this thread, can you help baby get his first hiking shoes?

Going to be hiking the Salkantay in Peru without a guide, I've never done more than ~20km hiking in a day so this (about 80km over 5 days) is new to me.

I've been recommended the Salomon Ultra 3 Mid GTX. Since I need a wide last it's basically a choice between the Mid boot or the shoes like the Ultra 3 or XA Pro 3D.

I will always recommend shoes over boots. The advantages of the Mid will be outweighed (literally) by how heavy they are compared to the shoes. They also aren't designed for running, so they probably won't be as comfortable as the XA Pro 3D.
And, memes aside, if there are other brands in your area with trail runners cheaper than Salomon they may be worth checking out. FYI I have only ever bought trail runners when they are on sale at a local outdoors store, and I don't care that much which model they are as long as they are designed for trail running and are reasonably light weight (I don't want to pay $200 for S/Lab Sense).

I own the XA Pro 3D (goretex) and while I'm kinda happy with them (bombproof) Im not sure if I would recommend them to anyone
X ultra is actually LIGHTER(really!) and cheaper so
unless you're really running fast on technical downhills the XAs are worse in every way
and if you are running then these are the heaviest running shoes you'll ever try on

the worst thing about them is the non aggressive pussy sole, it makes them more durable over asphalt(in comparison with other trail runners, durability is still shit compared to hiking shoes) but also makes them useless on anything wet. so you've got a bomber protected gore tex shoe that will slip on anything wet over 20degreees uphill or downhill
I still use them as a general hiking shoe, but if I could go back I would buy the X ultra, doubly so for my gf who also has them but only hikes
