They are nice. I just use a Z Lite Sol but any foam like that can work. The inflatable ones are all heavy or made for women/midgets so my feet and should hang off them and they aren't comfortable. And dealing with inflating/deflating is a pain in the ass.

I have an inflatable one that's 340g, packs down to twice the size of my fist. I'm >1.8m tall and fairly /fit/ and can sleep on it just fine - I do tend to improvize a pillow of sorts, effectively giving me at least 20cm extra room.

No, but they tend to have more insulation when they are inflated. The only times I've seen guys go winter camping with a foam mat is when they're layering it with an inflatable one as well.

Insulationwise you only need something below you. Last /out/ing it was getting very late and we couldnt find a campspot for our hammocks, so we put a poncholiner below us on some heavy moss and and used another poncholiner to cover ourselves, we were definetely NOT freezing from below, but the air was getting cold (close to 1 degrees celsius)

What you're forgetting is that the heat is retained regardless of which side of the reflective surface is facing it. Your radiant infrared heat will bounce off the mylar no matter which way it's turned.

Recently upgraded to an Exped down filled inflatable after using closed cell foam for years. Holy shit I have never had such a warm or comfortable sleep in a tent before, it's light, and packs down tiny. Biggest complaint is that on a cold and wet morning the last thing I want to do is fuck around deflating and rolling it up, but it's worth it for the difference in sleep.

I've got the Klymit, and while the size is an amazing advantage for short trips or overnight, it is just not as comfortable as a foam pad. Nor does it insulate as well (Not because it is inflatable, but because it is cheaper)

BUT, I have used it for about 1.5 years now, and it has not popped. It has helped me sleep much better than nothing. It comes with a patch kit of negligible weight. Overall, 3/5.
