I am planning on going innawoods in WA a few times this summer for the first time in years, but because of some unfortunate stuff that happened I need to buy all new kit.
How does this sound for a kit?
KaBar USMC knife
Kabar Kurkri machete
Probably a cheap walmart hatchet
Victorinox Swischamp (This I would use day to day so unless a leatherman is way better I prefer this)

Army surplus canteens
Army surplus Compass
Army surplus Sleeping bag
Stansport messkit if they don't have a surplus messkit
Probably walmart cooking stuff zippo lighter
Tough Grid paracord

Anything else will be bought generic

Lose the machete and the hatched.
Get a smaller multitool.
Canteens are fine, but make sure you have at least one of the canteen cups that usually go with those bottles.
Get a better compass. Silva or Suunto.
Lose the zippo and get a few Bics and a ferrocerium rod instead. Zippos are pure shit.

Leatherman Wave. Or Victorinox Huntsman, or something like that, although a pair of pliers is more practical in an /out/ setting than you might think.

I've used them primarily to untie stubborn knots, bending metal and removing fish hooks from fish.

why the fuck are suunto compasses so much? i remember using those flat clear compasses years ago for orienteering in high school but idr if they were suunto. they worked fine.

I have no idea. I'm a Silva mang myself. If you can't get a Silva or a Suunto, just make sure that what you have is not one of these god damn button compasses. They're unreliable at best.

Yes, those are the ones I had in mind. Pure garbage that should be illegal.

I don't know a whole lot about them or what makes them better than everything else, you'd have to talk to someone else about that. I have, however, had a cheaper, off-brand compass lose its orientation on me, but I couldn't tell you why that happened.

Machete is larp unless you're camping in the jungle but prepping food for any reasonably-sizef fire is a pain in the ass without a hatchet or short axe.

Don't buy anything surplus at all. You're vastly better off buying it from Walmart or some other store like that, it'll be cheaper and higher quality anyway. Don't spend a lot of money on a compass, you don't need one for just going /out/ and having fun, you need one for shit that's more ambitious than what you're going to start out doing if you need to ask these questions. It's a waste of money, buy a gun instead if you need to spend the money on something you'll be happy to have some day. Buy a multitool like the others said. Buy a decent rucksack to carry your shit, rucksacks are one of the few things where the cheapest options are markedly terrible rather than just acceptable.

You probably don't need any of these. What are you planning innawoods? I can see a hatchet if you plan on making a fire, but make sure your aware of the rules regarding taking wood wherever you're going.

Army surplus stuff is, iirc, heavier and worse than most other things you can buy elsewhere. If you wanna be cheap with water bottles, get a couple plastic Dasani/Aquafina/Smart Water bottles and just use those – they’re light, cheap, and carry water just as well.
With most compasses, you can’t go wrong, and someone else already made a post about those so I’ll skip.
Definitely better off not getting a surplus sleeping bag though – fuckers are heavy. If you’re willing to splurge anywhere, splurge here and get a decent synthetic bag. If you decide to stick with going /out/ then invest in a down bag down the line for sure.

Just get a couple of the plastic bic lighters from the gas station and/or a small box of strike-anywhere matches. All are more reliable and lighter.

OP, what are you sleeping in/under? And where in WA are you going? I’m a WA-resident myself (Seattle) so I could probably give you some recommendations and help you better prepare for the conditions. Depending on where you go, it can get quite chilly at night – make sure you’re bringing a sleeping pad as well as a bag. One of therm-a-rest’s cheaper foam pads should do you just fine.
