Is a compas really at all necessary?
I would think almost everyone has an innate sense of direction that's at least accurate enough to give you NSEW. And even if you don't it's as easy as looking at where the sun is.
The only time I can see it being necessary is if you are trying to do some night navigation where you are dealing with peak disorientation.
