I've had a Charge TTI for over a year now and I love it. But is there anything out there that's lighter with much of the same usefulness? The Skeletool doesn't cut it.

I searched the catalog and did not see a multi-tool thread so I guess multi-tool thread. SAKs too.

Probably not. Leathermans are the best multi-tools by a significant margin, and afaik the only full-sized Leatherman that's lighter than the Charge/Wave is the Skeletool. You could go a little smaller and get the Wingman or one of the ones like it.

While I'm /out/ I only bring my style cs (has scissors instead of pliers, on the far right. Also has a small knife, file and removable tweazers)

For edc, I carry the surge or skeletool depending on my day. If im just being a tourist around town I prefer a folding blade, though

Was curious how the wingman compared to skeletool, and the wingman pliers are way bigger, and only a cm or less smaller than the surge.

Wingman is also spring loaded on the pliers if it matters.

My skeletool is my most used Leatherman, as it was my first. It is really easy to open and close. The surge is pretty new, and definitely the least consistent on opening and closing difficulty.

Im sure it will fix with use, or a little oil/grease.

Saw a locksmith using an old multitool this week, and they had some serious mileage on them. It looked like a butterfly knife with how loose they were, but the guy was obviously a wizard with them.

Pic unrelated, but my leatherman raptor. I was an emt for 5 years, and wanted these for a long time. These are a waste imo. Haven't used them for anything more than cutting a few pennies for novelty, and opening mountain house meals.

The Leatherman Sidekick is about 100 grams lighter than the Charge TTI, slightly smaller, while still giving you about everything you need for /out/. It's very nice and also relatively cheap, I recommend. Also has spring-loaded pliers. The only problem with it is that the cutters don't close all the way for whatever reason, which might be a dealbreaker for some.

Forgot to add, the Sidekick is essentially the Wingman but trades the scissors for a saw and has a plain blade instead of the combo, as well as a small serrated blade on the inside tools.

OP, I'm coming up to twenty years on my Wave, never got around to replacing it with the later one with bit drivers, and I've been flirting with a Charge TTi for a few weeks now, mostly because of the S30V blade. What's turned me off, though, is the rescue cutter on the serrated blade; rational or not, I keep looking at it and thinking they've just made the serrated blade fragile. Have you ever had cause to fear it breaking?

I rarely use it. When I do it's for some paracord. It seems robust enough but it does have some flex so it'd probably break if you stomped it or something like that..

how many times have you used each of the tools on your multitool? I just don't see the point of paying up to $100 bucks for a pliers when I have a mora and a saw. and why in fuck would you pay that much for a multi tool with JUST pliers and a knife?! (meaning the skeletool) when you can just get a a pliers for a fraction of the price.

OP here. The pliers are literal life savers. Mainly use them to pull cords but they have also unfucked everything from bent zippers to getting quills out of the dog.

As for the other tools on the TTI, I use them more to fix other tools and equipment than anything else. Little screw driver in particular for sunglasses is nice. The big flathead helps for optics in a pinch also. If you have the bit driver set the smaller hex bit can be used a pin punch but I haven't needed it. That said I find the saw near useless for me but what can you expect from a small saw? The scissors work but are inferior to a SAKs.

The back of the saw on a leatherman is the best ferro rod striker you could ask for and while not particularly useful for sawing things it does make sawdust good for use in a birdnest.

The saw is good for cutting thin metal or thick plastic when you don't want to dull any other tool.

There's more urban usefulness for a multitool than wilderness use.

Get a leatherman signal if you want an /out/ multitool

Leatherman has the screwdrivers with those goofy small bits that you can change out. They sell a bit pack and if you could find a couple nut drivers to add in there plus the Leatherman X Fluke NCV attachment, you would be set

You can't get a knife that good plus everything else in the Skeletool for a fraction of the price. A Skeletool CX with decent pliers, a screwdriver, and a bottle opener (all of which I use several times a week) plus a 154CM blade for $80 isn't a bad deal.

It was where it is shown in the pic between the three spacer things and that solid piece that wraps across with the "leatherman®" logo. I think it's function is to tighten everything up and make it hard to open/close. I dunno - you can see the three wear marks on the edge of the copper piece where it rubbed against the spacers.

i would wager it has something to do with stiffness, when you assemble steel parts you can get wobbly if you don't put softer metals in between.

If you're ok with nonlocking tools then a SAK might be what you're looking for, some of the newer ones have a locking blade.

Before everyone says you can't do shit with an SAK, check out this guy's channel, I've seen him build, shelters boats and split logs using an SAK.

I got one just to check it out and now it's what I carry. The blades and the saw is thicker than normal Leathermans and the knife sharpener actually comes off to sharpen its own blade. Why the hell does the Wave attach the sharpener???? You can't take it off to sharpen itself.

I'm a big fan of the Swisstool Spirit. It's much more nicely built than modern Leathermans and it packs more tools into a thinner and more pocket-friendly space. Its downsides are that it's definitely a two-handed tool and the knife blade sucks, I carry mine alongside a dedicated folding knife but as a solo tool that might be a killer.

I'm really interested to try the new Leatherman Free, it looks like they've emulated a lot of the stuff I like about the Spirit (thinner package than the Wave, all outside opening tools) while also making it one hand usable.

I don't think Leatherman intended the Wave's one to be a knife sharpener, it's there for stuff like cleaning up burrs on a piece of metal or maybe sharpening something that doesn't need a super fine edge, like a lawnmower blade.

There is a "Wood/Metal File" on one side and a "Diamond-coated File" on the other. The diamond coated file is smoother than my kitchen knives steels.
