There is a lot of borderline seething hate on cairns for this board.
I don't like them either, I think they are kind of silly, but I understand why people do them. For a lot of people there is a deeper connection to a place that comes from influencing the landscape directly, leaving your mark. I would much rather people stack some rocks than making alterations to the landscape that can be damaging, like carving names in trees, doing graffiti, picking wild flowers, etc.
Seems totally harmless yet very rewarding for visitors.
