Assume you don't have a gun or many people you can trust. OP's scenario means there will be several years before any sort of order will be restored, so you will not only have to defend yourself and your house, but also any fields you are growing stuff in, water reservoirs, etc. You can try your best with barbed wire, but that will never keep out roaming mobs of city folk. Look at the trouble police and farmers are already getting from rural thefts and trespassers alone for example, with one security site going as far as recommending "3 metre, 2.5 tonne concrete barriers" around your property, which by the way is illegal without council planning permission that you are unlikely to get, not to mention advertising you are hiding and protecting something.
Is there any point in prepping if other people are just going to take it away from you? Or should you just become part of the looting, pillaging and begging mob yourself with a little bit of extra prepping knowledge of what to steal/where to go?
