Lanternfag here. I love them.
>>150902This. I'd recommend the old style Coleman gas lantern over the propane lantern because while they're somewhat finicky, they're the brightest portable lantern you can get. Period. No questions asked, it's the brightest, deal with it.
>>151155I have 3 of OP pic related lanterns. They're all walmart specials, and they’re fucking chinese junk. That being said, mine have been used heavily for 3 years and are still going strong. They need constant attention, but if you get a nice deitz it will be sturdier. the walmart lanterns work.
The upside of these kerosene lanterns, is that while generally you will attract bugs with light, the kerosene lanterns will run off citronella tiki torch fuel, and thus keep the bugs away. This is an advantage over the coleman gas lanterns, but they're not as bright.
>>150953For backpacking, you're better off with a headlamp, but I recently purchased a Primus Micron Lantern, and it runs off isobutane canisters like a pocket rocket stove. If you already havethe canisters, you might want to look into it. Pic related, it's the lightest real flame lantern, but probably not 'ultralight backpacking gear'
