It's powerful enough to be practical when learning and experienced, it gets 80mpg, parts are cheap and ubiquitous, and the aftermarket is rock solid. 2013 500f's went for about 3200 USD, last I checked.
Honda, as a company, builds engines much tougher than they need to be. It's normal for a Honda rider to see their odometers roll over, where any other would have already given the ghost. They stress simplicity in maintenance, and make the best selling bike in the US (cmx250 rebel) alongside the best selling vehicle in the world (c90 super cub).
