I like Western Red Cedar quite a bit, not just because it's beautiful but because it can provide everything you need to live except food, be it clothing, shelter, transportation.... oh, and once it's dry it can light from a match with no tinder.

I've got to agree with you on live oaks.

I've moved up into the Hudson Valley for college and it's definitely breathtaking, but I always miss those beautiful live oaks. Can't beat them southern live oaks.

Basswood is a close second, as the buds and young leaves are tasty and I like trying to make cordage out of the bark and carving spearfishing decoys out of the wood.

Also, I like cedar trees. Once, a limb blew down in a storm and the whole property smelled like a cigar box for days. Just amazing!

I'm a hemlock fan too. I was told to enjoy them now because they can all be gone in my lifetime thanks to the woolly adelgid. I'm just north of where it currently is and apparently it's headed here.

This is a good idea. We do clearcutting and controlled burns in a sandplains area to create habitat for an endangered species and I've seen good outcomes of that.
