I has two different types of conical hats, but this one seems to be the toughest of the two.

I've got a Dorfman Pacific Scala Clasico Outback hat, it's crushable felt and great, but can be a bit overwhelming in the desert.

When I'm in the desert and it's really hot or I'm in a canoe, I wear one of these:

I'm in Northern Nevada and I just wear a ballcap. I dont really get burned, unless I'm in a boat. If your out hiking I doubt you'll be going across the valley flats. If your going camping for a few days though I recommend going full on with the wide brim hat and tons of sunscreen. The sun will wear you completely out after a full day or two.

I got onnadees Columbia brand hats, its called the borabora or something. lightweight fabric on top, thicker on the brim, packs down small, has head ventilation which actually does kinda work. downside is it doesnt look real cool and was like 30 $. its also got a tensioned elastic thing so you can make it fit tighter in winds. I do wish the brim was stiffer because it cal flop around in wind but every wide brimmed boonie is like that
