You don't bushcraft with an axe. Those are too large for the job. Bushcraft is just small things and needs smaller tools like a hatchet. An axe is for something like large wood processing and making cabins. Cabin making isn't bushcraft it is carpentry. As for what hatchet is best will depend on what you are making. A hatchet with an adze on the back would be good for hollowing out things. The shape of the adze, flat or curved will determine what types of things you can make. Like curved for making bowls or boats from wood and flat for planing. A hatchet with a flat face can be used as a hammer, but you can make a baton from wood so you wouldn't need a hammer in that case. A gouge will be better and less tiring to use than a curved adze.

I'm looking for a good but inexpensive hatchet but not sure what to get. Was thinking about something like this as it looks small and light and seems well rated, but that plastic handle doesnt inspire confidence.

For a mass produced axe available at most fine hardware stores near you, yes, they are pretty good. I used mine when I lived on a property that abutted a forest that stretched on for many many acres. Had a fireplace, and I'd harvest fallen wood on a regular basis.

Ultimately we moved because neighbours were total rednecks and coyotes kept fucking up our pets. Fuck coyotes, man, I certainly fantasized about driving an axe through a coyote skull or ten.

I replaced that with one from the hardware store, and it's been fine since
were I to do this all over, I'd probably just grab one from the hardware store since I wound up reprofiling and sharpening the edge anyway
