Canadian Forest Ranger here.

These people do legit exist. However not in the parks but certainly along their peripheries. Still deep within remot, mountainous crown land.

Many of them are Free Man on the Land, Sovereign Citizen types. A lot of natives. Criminals.

There are supposedly settlements, if you could call them that. Places where the law won't go and doesn't matter.

OPs scenario might not be common, but it has absolutely happened multiple times that we at least know of.

After looking at it for a while and noticing that the blood on it matched that of a mamba, we decided to search it and found the footprint. That was enough to show the truth from the beginning and we knew that the boy had seen something. Thank you for yo̸ur̵ service

I haven't read it but I have listened to a podcast about it.
There's a take on the Bermuda Triangle that there actually isn't any large amount of mysterious disappearances in that area. That if you account for the amount of traffic through that area, weather conditions etc. it's just normal. Planes crash, ships sink.
This is my take on the Missing 411. There's nothing exceptional here. You could make a doco about Chicago and call it "Missing 9001" and say "Look at all these black drug dealers that disappeared, must be faeries or Satanic cults!"
Yeah, people die and go missing in parks like they do everywhere else.

I've read the West Coast book and it was pretty interesting. He never mentions Bigfoot or gives any theory really. Some of the cases are pretty weird and sad. Overall pretty good spooky book if you're looking for something like that.

The allegedly unusual disappearances represent nothing unusual, & are instead best explained by non-mysterious causes such as falling or sudden health-crises leading to a lone person becoming immobilised off-trail, drowning, bear attack, environmental exposure, or even deliberate disappearance are other explanations as well. The cases are not outside of the frequency that I would expect.

The criteria that Paulides uses when determing which cases to profile boils down to "unexplained disappearances that cannot be rationalized as normal occurrences". This means by definition these cases are not obvious instances of human or animal predation, or acts of god. The cases cannot be explained by obvious causes, and therein lies the mystery. There are too many repeating circumstances for this phenomenon (if you want to call it that) to be staged, incompetent s&r, massive government coverup, hidden caves, etc.
I realize there are many people who are not a fan of Paulides, but I think the stories he brings to light warrant investigation.

He literally takes standard "lost innawoods" cases and tries to make them spooky. For example, he tends to rule out hypothermia in many cases because "warm weather," even though random storms do blow through high Alpine areas all the time and it doesn't take that long to get it. Also, just generally speaking as a national park employee, visitors are fucking stupid. So it doesn't really surprise me when people fall off cliffs or get washed down rivers. Last week we had a very experienced river guide get swept into the river trying to dislodge the raft he was training other guides on, so it happens to veterans too and quite often. The woods are dangerous and anybody can go at any moment for any reason, the odds stack against you the more you roll those dice.

Maybe Paulides is just making shit up and I would not know, because I did not check the case myself, but the cases where kids were found on mountaintops in an area that would be difficult to climb even for an adult make me think though.

The real explanation for most “unexplained” shit is that sometimes weird shit happens or people act stupid and it has nothing to do with the supernatural.

An area a kid can’t climb to is probably more likely an area where a kid can’t climb to -safely-. When I was a dumbass 12-year-old kid who didn’t understand EROSION BAD, I climbed on top of one of these things. Took me no time at all to get up, and I could gave kept going if there was more to climb. If it wasn’t a tourist trap and I was wandering around alone I might have gotten stuck at the top, died, and I’d be an entry for the dude’s book.

That’s just that one specific thing, but I’m sure we all have a story of some stupidass shit that happened, particularly if someone’s panicking.

Also, I’m sure people get murdered innawoods all the time for all sorts of reasons. Doesn’t mean they’re all connected.

most of these can be explained away by just claiming people are legitimately fucking stupid these days and don't go prepared with medkits or they got fucked up by wildlife, but there are a few cases he brings up that creep me out like the one about the kids belongings being neatly folded on a rock and the stuff in his backpack being laid out like it was being inventoried but the kid had crossed this big fucking river and ended up some big amount of miles away on the other side of the river where he went missing

I was the exact kid who would have done that shit. It doesn’t even need to be a thing kids do, it just needs to be a thing that kid decided to do that day. Maybe he thought he could get his bearings. Maybe he got excited and didn’t realize he was in danger. Maybe he’d seen too much TV and though he could seek help from mountain spirits and shit.

Or maybe he got murdered, plenty plausible. But sounds like panic and hypothermia to me.
