I wouldn't worry too much about raw pace, if you want to cover large distances the trick is more about hours hiked rather than speed. your pace will naturally increase the more you hike. 3mph is a pretty standard "quick" pace. But you should focus on hiking for 10-12 hours in a day.
I'm making assumptions here. What is the goal? What are you training for? I personally focus on coniditioning if I am training. There isn't really a realistic way I can prepare for hiking all day, day after day, during my working life. I'm normally training for a thru hike. So I do a lot of running in sandals to keep my knees, feet, and ankles strong. My main aim is to increase injury resistance.
If you don't do much cardo then some cycling would be a good place to start.
