I usually bring my banjo, and I usually have a Jew's Harp and a harmonica in my car.
I tend to just play by myself, but one of my buddies is an alright harmonica player.
Songwise it's mostly union songs, Joe Hill and Utah Phillips stuff. I know a bunch of Appalachian songs that I don't know the names of too.

Indeed, I had an old timer teach that to me when I was a child in the 70s. He always sang it "old dan tucker was a fine old man, warshed his face in a fryin' pan, combed his face with a wagon wheel, died with a tooth pick in his heel". I later read that it was "tooth ache", but I enjoyed the imagery ol' Walt's version gave me back then.

Mandolin or a fiddle is good. Same finger positions. If you play guitar mandolin would be way easier but if you have violin experience do fiddle. If you have both then fiddle.
If you have a guitar that’s great. But what gets people dancing is the fiddle man.
Every campfire I ever been at I bring my fiddle. It’s an old cheap thing but damn does it get people’s spirits up and happy.

When hiking with a group in a populated area we're often singing everywhere we go on the top of our lungs, we're sc/out/s so people don't care. The dutch more campfirey songs that are popular in our group are: hutchacha, tante fien is dood, de historie van hinkie pinkie, boom staat op de berg (bog down in the valley), 10 kleine aapjes, chika boom and some more that I can't think of right now. But those are definitely my favorites!

Huh weird, seems like the campfires songs still differ from region to region and group to group because my scout group never sings those, despite also being Dutch.
We often sing Keesje de Jordaan, Aan de oever van de Rotte, Leve het nijlpaard, Julia Julia Julia, and the Wild Rover.

I had a vinyl 45 of it when I was three years old on my little Sears blue jean pattern record player in 1976, year of the bicentennial, incidentally. I can still hear it anywhere at any moment in my head, perfectly. His voice helped introduce my toddler mind to primalness, it just seemed so raw and expressive.

Check out Dan Levenson's DVDs Clawhammer from Scratch. They were very highly praised in the banjo forums years back so I got them and they are breddy gud.

This was my first. I went out looking for it specifically, and finally found it in a mountain of piled records. It has a pretty heavy echo during Big Iron, and it always gets stuck on The Master's Call, but I love it dearly.

If you try clawhammer on any banjo using that spot with your "hammer hand", you'll see that it gives what many consider to be a "sweeter sound" for that style of playing. Having a banjo with a scooped board in that area makes that technique much easier, but you can do it without it, and you can also just hammer over the head, but it will produce a different sound. Best advice is to do with what you have, and if you develop to the point where that would make a difference, you'll know, and you can then plan for getting your next banjo.

Do any of you know any good fiddle songs or have any recommendations? I can play a couple like big rock candy mountain, dancing bear, and swallowtail jig but I don't really know any others. Should I just look some up on google or something?

I remember hearing a really good one many years ago.

I can't remember many words but it was about some parent or grandparent who wanted to bring their kid (addressed in the song as "you") into the wilderness as much as possible so that at the elder's eventual death the kid will still be able to find solace in their image while camping or exploring.

Referenced rolling blue skies, starry nights, quiet ocean, etc etc. Very nice. I wish I could hear it again.
