That's part of what confuses me. I caught one smallmouth in a shallow river last spring. I don't remember what color or weight; it was probably yellow. Otherwise I've caught nothing on one.

I'll gladly admit I don't know what the fuck I'm doing, since most advice is "tie on a [lure type] and you'll catch anything." But that should be like above: "Use an inline spinner in rivers and small streams, and you'll likely catch a lot." I won't blame the advice; I just wish I knew what I was doing wrong.

I've also learned that the river where I did catch only one fish is extremely pressured at times. I'd been a time or two when there weren't many people. This weekend, for example however, there were so many people, they were parking along the highway and walking upwards of a quarter mile to get there. So it's no wonder the fish have grown picky.

Most of my fishing these days is done in a nearby lake with crappie, large mouth bass, (I think blue) catfish, and a few sunfish species, and when I finally get around to replacing the seat, I'll take my kayak on a slow-moving river a little farther out.

But fuck, guys, I've hardly even caught any bass, even casting what should be successful lures into areas where everyone suggests bass should be. Then the next guy comes along, throws something similar, and hauls them in.

That Shimano anon mentioned isn’t bad. Abu Cardinals, Pflueger Triton, and if Dick’s still has those white Okumas for $30, those are decent too. 6’ M Lightning Rod with that white Okuma Stratus V and 10lb Power Pro is one of my favorite combos for just dicking around because it will run 1/8oz to 1/2oz lures all day and I can have fun with panfish up to bigger bass and sneks on it.

Fishing pressured spots sucks. Try to find some little unknown lakes and ponds in industrial areas or subdivisions. And as summer comes and the water gets warm, you may want to get on more of finesse baits. I never really fish rivers with moving water, but a great summer bet is a Zoom Finesse Worm Texas Rigged with a 2/0EWG hook and like 1/8 to 1/4oz bullet weight. The warmer the temps and higher the pressure, the slower you go with it. Just hop it along the bottom, let it sit for a second or two, hop again, and wait for a bass to grab it. Be patient setting the hook though because they will grab the tail first and if you try and set the hook as soon as you feel the bite, you yank it from their mouth.

Hey o, I went and bought myself a license + 2nd rod stamp, as well as new ways to take fish. I got the rule book the parks and wildlife department puts out every year, as well as the actual regulation book in PDF, and researched what the legal methods of take in Colorado are. The only thing I knew I wanted and opted to not buy were jugs/noodles, mostly because amazon had a shit selection that I thought was expensive and I saw some good ole boy on YouTube make them with PVC + pool noodles.

When I got my license I went to Cabelas and bought a Shakespeare Ugly Stick Bigwater + UGLYBW50 spincaster + 10lb mono. already have a couple stringers, filet knife, big needle nose pliers, a couple rod holders. I have a tiny assortment of hooks, bobbers, weights, lures swivels, snells.

And I know it’s not for fish but I was intrigued and got a Generic Fishing Magnet 2.36” 330lb + 100’ 550 lb rope.

I’m mainly looking for any advice you can give me on what else I should get bait/tackle/lure/tool wise you think makes fishing better + catch everything available in Colorado. I’d like to try baitcaster but the Cabela’s guy said they’re a pita. Also not super into the idea of ice fishing atm.

Never trotlined. don’t expect to any time soon but it seems interesting. The one I got has no floats, and some reviews said hooks were small.

Meh, any cheap spinning reel will work for salt but you better clean it off really well. The saltwater reels are sealed better with better bearings, but they also cost more. If you need a rod and reel, why not spend the extra $20-$50 on a Penn?

Penn Fierce combos are only $80-$100 at Bass Pro, and the Battle is $120. I would suggest going that route to get started. Everybody loves those combos and they’re built for saltwater. It’s not the cheapest $40 Walmart setup, but it will last you years if you take care of it and can always be a backup rod once you figure out exactly what you like and drop more money on a Spinfisher or better.

A Penn Battle II combo will do well for inshore saltwater, that's what I used for the longest time. Make sure to clean and re-oil the main shaft under the spool often, thats where a lot of salt can get in.

Yeah, I don't mean they stock wild ones, only that they stock brookies (in addition to rainbows and browns). I mean there are streams with healthy and stable wild populations (mostly brookies in the faster sections, but a few bows in with them, and mostly browns and bows in the slower sections), and other streams which they stock heavily (most of the stocked streams have lower limits, usually 6 per day instead of 12; a few very heavily fished streams have lower limits still, and minimum lengths, but most of those are dominated by browns and rainbows, not brookies, anyway). Most of the stockers these days are deliberately bred sterile, which is another indication that the wild populations are pretty healthy.

Other Lake Champlain anon here. Last night friend and I were out bassin'. I caught one decent smallie on a crankbait.
Right around sunset along comes this dude right through our spot throwing some kind of jig. He was working it along the bottom with a real fast jerk, pause, jerk. Looked like it could have been a plastic minnow. He caught two nice bass on back-to-back casts just feet from us.
Any ideas why I suck so bad or what he was throwing?

you also need a fed parks pass, a state parks pass, and some of cities have a pass for their reservoirs, and some reservoirs have an added cost on top just because theyre huge.
we haven't even gotten into the small game license and add on stamps for that.

I dont remember last years price for certain but i think the annual license went up 5-10, and 2nd rod doubled this year. you can avoid paying the $10 habitat stamp every year if you buy a lifetime for $300. though I agree on the jewing, desu i dont mind giving money to the state parks and wildlife department. its one of the better uses of my money as far as im concerned.

The fly fishing rod, spear/gig, dip net, fishing bow, and fishing slingbow can be swapped out with a rod as im understanding the law.

Gray case at left is actually the Shakespeare folder. Surprisingly sensitive, but the top eye had to be glued back on last week.

Any carp dudes here? I love catching grass carp at my local pond. Yesterday I chummed a spot with about ten cans of corn, and casted my line with a bread ball on it into the corn chum, about 15 feet off shore. I set my poke on a stand and attached a clip on bell to the tip so I'd know if I got a hit.
While that was stewing I threw a drop rig with worm attached maybe 20 meters away.
Out of the BLUE a grass carp got my worm and we wrestled for about 5 minutes til he broke the knot on my swivel (wasn't expecting a 14lb carp to bite my worm). Got away.

Anyone got carp tips? These fish don't like floating bread, I've only caught on bread balls in middle summer. Should I try shrimp or something?

They're confined to that little lake. It's man-made by a dam; a tiny creek trickles in through a marshy area, and there's a spillway designed to keep fish from going over (much; I've never seen it deep enough to cover a duck's feet when they're standing on it). There's a load of that snotty grass in the lake near the shore, and some other plants. The carp seem to just graze around.

There is probably a quality jump from the okuma celilo to the fenwick eagle/hmx but there's probably not much difference between the eagle or hmx. Hmx has slightly difference guide insert and reel seat (hmx might feel better but slightly less durable) but both are already the same.
I'm not saying that celilo is that bad neither. It might just werk and you might not notice the slight difference in quality enough to bother you.

Why I asked is that I'm looking at picking up a light or ultralight rod (primarily to be used for trout) to supplement my existing medium (a functional, but nothing special Dick's Field & Stream model). Yeah, it probably will be if I have a decent rod for it. Stream fishing for trout is something I can just up and do on a whim, as there is a very nice brook within a 5-10 minute walk from my house, and several larger streams within a 15-20 minute drive. My current rod dates to when my father and I got into boat fishing on lakes and reservoirs, but we haven't even had the boat out in several years now. Most of my past experience has been with earthworms, but I want to get into spinners, and for that I really need a lighter rod.

I also keep meaning to try getting into fly fishing someday, but that's going to have to wait until I have more money.

Otherwise I mull around in a tackle shop for a while until I muster up the strength to ask someone who works there, usually while buying something I need to get anyway. As far as I know, there are two best places to hook one: Through the nose (there's argument about whether it's better to put it through the top and bottom jaws, or just the top), or through the back just behind the dorsal fin.

It's because clicking them shut clamps them to the hook, in case you need to change grip angle. It removes one layer of complication from the process for difficult hooks. Additionally, if a hook is being truly difficult and you need to move with the fish, you can keep the hemostat clamped to the hook, in stead of having to find it again.

It's kind of confusing since in other types of fishing a "leader" is a generally short segment (sometimes wire for toothy species like pike) which connects the hook or lure to the main line. In fly fishing. much longer "leaders," usually tapered (fatter at one end than the other), are used at the end of the main line, and what everyone else calls a "leader" is called "tippet," instead.

IIRC, some Brits prefer the term "trace" to both "tippet" and "leader" in the non-fly sense.

That grip (called gill grip here) is actually the safest and easiest way to handle and hold pike.
More handy on fish larger than the one you are replying to though. Hard to get more than a finger under the gill plate on a dink like that.

I have no use for kayaks at all: too unstable for my purposes (I get that they are good at whitewater and rough seas, because of the closed cockpit, but I don't so that shit). I do like a good canoe, but I would be somewhat reluctant to try to fish from one. If I'm going to fish, it's from a boat designed for stability rather than fast travel.

A rowboat is fine for ponds, reservoirs, small lakes, and even bays in fair weather, and can be fitted with an outboard and/or an electric trolling motor. Used ones aren't really that expensive if you buy one without a motor (which you can always add later).

There are a lot of sit-on-top kayaks made for stability. Many are designed to stand in and fish. They're just human-powered (for the most part; there are some electric motored models these days), which float in shallower water.

If you're not willing to fish from your canoe because it's unstable, then you have no business claiming a kayak is unstable. I can tip my kayak until shit is falling off the top, and it will not overturn.

And it's a fact that canoes are more stable than (traditional) kayaks. If you find a canoe less stable, it's only because you are doing it wrong (sitting on the seat instead of kneeling on the bottom and just resting your butt on the seat). Kayaks are more maneuverable than canoes, and handle rough water better, but they are not more stable in calm water. In fact, the mere fact that you can tip your kayak like that is proof that it is less stable: it's inherently easier to tip a kayak in the first place than a canoe, and the fact that it's also easier to recover a kayak from a severe tip is not the same thing as stability.

I didn't presuppose what anyone else thinks: on this subject, I simply don't care. If you think SOT is a true "kayak," you are objectively wrong and that's the end of the story. No one is going to convince me otherwise, so there's no point in debating it further.

And I didn't "jump into the thread." I post in these threads regularly, and generally just ignore talk about kayaks. I hate them (both the real thing and SOTs, though for different reasons), but I don't really want to derail the thread by arguing about them. I only said something this time in response to someone else expressing their own dislike of them. Probably poor judgement on my part seeing how the post I replied to was going on six hours old, but the intent was simply to make conversation and offer an alternative. How about we just let it drop?

Another deal with yellowtail or charter fishing is that you pay good amount of money for a single trip that last a whole day. I keep putting off actually going on a charter because I end up using the money to buy new gear instead. I was considering going last year but I end up getting into kayak fishint instead. Its not for everyone, but a lot of people drop it because casting isn't very forgiving. A bad cast with a spinning rod either sends it straight up or in to a snag. A baitcaster leaves a birdsnest. A bad cast with a fly rod can mean anything from a missed target, a tangle, or a hook in the fisherman.
Dont let me scare you off though. It is a lot of fun once you figure it out. A scientific study was done and fly fishing was found to be meditative in the same way as yoga. Something about the repetitive, consistent movement.

Fly casting is very therapeutic. I'm with a veterans org called Project Healing Waters and fly fishing is used as a form a recreational therapy with that program.

Fly casting takes work but once you get it you're alright. It's all about timing for me. After that it's learning all the weird casts like roll casts, bow and arrow casts, and single hand spey. I fish in a lot of heavy forest areas and find myself roll casting a lot.

I went fishing at the beach for the first time today and caught fuck all. I did get some nasty blisters on my toes though. Any tips for surf fishing? I'm thinking next time I'll tie on a spoon and go wild since I only got a little bait stolen off the bottom rig I was using and never even suspected anything was after it until I reeled in thanks to the waves jerking things around constantly.

Don't they fight crazy hard too? I'm kinda jealous of all the variety florida fisherman have. We have bass/bluefish/fluke season for salt then you pack it in and go freshwater

Better than largemouth. Native North American freshwater fish just aren’t that aggressive overall, I think that’s why invasive species can take over so easily because those fish come from water with rapist dolphins and cayman and the Asian fish can survive living in mud during the dry season. Snakeheads dive and dig like no other fish I have caught, they will wrap you up underwater quick too like that one I hooked that I can only guess was one of the 40”+ giant bullseye sneks that a couple people have landed in this area.

The cichlids are a blast to catch too compared to bluegill or crappie. Pic related, those fuckers love to run back and forth parallel to you at like 100mph while you’re reeling them in.

Kayaks, canoes, or the failed pallet-boat that my sisters made when we were kids are all water-going vessels, no matter what you call them. If you can't pilot one safely, that's on you.
