The water levels in Lake Huron - Lake Michigan are dropping at a staggering rate. In the last 15 years the water level has dropped over 5 feet and continues to fall.
www.Stopthedrop.ca is an organisation which wants to petition the Ontario, Canadian and carious US state governments to implement a method to slow the water draining through the St. Claire and Detroit rivers. We need 20,000 people to sign up on stopthedrop.ca before Labour Day so our petition can go forward.

I go up there almost every year since I was a kid and the drop lately is, as OP said, staggering.

Lake Ontario here, we'll stop the drop if your cities stop sending all those industrial toxins downstream. My local beach is closed today because of excessive bacteria.

Grand Rapids isn't on the lake.

Lake Ontario is high, but nothing really above normal for the time of year. Lake Huron/Georgian Bay have dropped several feet in the last 20 years or so (I can walk where I used to fish and sail as a kid) so even if they rise a bit they're still well below where they should be.

Toronto here. Our bacteria is largely from local pollution (sewage into storm sewers. and dogshit in the parks). It's the smog we get from them.

Lake Ontario's pollution is due to Lake Erie and industry on the lake itself. It has nothing to do with Lake Huron water which is the second cleanest lake next to Superior.

its not dredging it as much thats the problem. Its historic dredging on the st clair river thats the problem. Back in the day they made it deeper for shipping. The problem with that being that the "hole" that Huron drains into is now a lot bigger and able to drain water at a quicker rate than it can refill.

currently at my grand parents cottage on lake superior. and it's interesting that you mention the water level falling on those lakes because where we are the either the lake has shifted or the water level has risen. our cottage has been moved back probably 200ft from it's original location (built in late 1800s') and now the cabin is about 200ft from the lake.
