If you happen to be one of the 100 people in history who end up stranded alone on an island castaway style, it will give you something to do while you wait for rescue. Actively think about what possibilities for emergencies exist in your real adventures. The worst I've personally ever encountered involve getting lost in a thick wood past dark having to find my way back 3 some kilometers back to camp. We had a lighter, compass and .22 rifle and pocket knives. No phones or lights, we used the lighter to read the compass to bushwack to the river that we had camped on. No big fucking deal. If you walk in you can walk out, so instead of a book on how to make fucking snares and lean-tos bring basic equipment. You're not tucking in to fucking wilderness life, even with no food or water you can walk solid for days if you need to.
