yeah thats what I thought. I think I may have been researching kayaking through a river that went through an old mill town that my family lives in. But I can't find that either.

might depend on where you live. It's definitely not a universal rule but if the water is near a lot of shit then you might want to stay off for a day or two after raining.

and people who bathe in the Ganges die too. If the water is really really bad then even just being near it for too long (like floating right above it in a kayak) would be unhealthy and you better hope you don't fall in or even get splashed.
I imagine most waters in the US aren't like that anymore, but a few decades ago there were probably some urban waters that you wouldn't want to kayak on. And idk about other countries
