Is there a "right" or "wrong" way to baton wood? Saw Lilly do it and I'm thinking of adding it to my rustic skill sets this summer while out.

Remember, instead of splitting small limbs, you can normally feather a stick to allow the wood to burn effectively even in wet or frozen conditions.

nice bait, but the main thing is just to not baton large cross sections. it's tempting to try and quarter a thicc log, but that's what breaks high carbon blades. it's not nearly such a problem though if you're using 1055 steel.

Why make sticks and twigs when they are there already hanging out with the rest of the wood.
Some guy takes down a dead tree and limbs it leaving all the smaller pieces for some reason, then makes smaller pieces out of larger pieces with a knife. I think batoning is a youtube meme like certain brands of equipment.

I'm not pro batonning, But there is most definitely merit to skipping the twigs and branches and trying to quarter or even smaller, large pieces. Let's say everything is wet. Getting to the dry inside is imperative then.

There's no need for that. Wood doesn't soak up much water unless it is submerged for excessive periods of time or is rotten. Instead all you need to do is feather the outside of the wood. The feather sticks he is making are pretty terrible anyway. A feather stick should be very fluffy. When I'm starting fires I normally feather the logs themselves to the level he is feathering his tinder. I feather sticks to a higher degree so that they are much better at taking flame even if they are wet and/or frozen. That's where the fluffy factor is required. I don't split anything, I actually don't even saw anything. I live in a temperate rainforest area so there's no need. There's deadfall everywhere that isn't usually growing things quite yet.

You realise that in order to get to the stage he was in at the start of the video he already needed a saw or an axe to cut that perfectly cylindrical log, as well as an axe or a knife to fashion the mallet he uses to hammer with, not to mention the rubber tube...
AND he has to carry this heavy tool that has no versatility, unless he plans to make a shelter with handmade shingles...

The whole point of batonning with a survival knife is it's something that can be done with the minimum of equipment.

Spines of blades take far more loading due to being flat, and they'll all break eventually from it.

If you have to because for actual real survival and not play-survival, sure, but you still run the risk.

You can chop kindling with a knife without needing to hit the spine. Chopping on the edge doesn't put much stress on the blade, and you most likely won't run into problems (as long as the tang runs most of the way to the pommel area).

Multitools are not properly heat treated most of the time, making them brittle or even too ductile. I once saw someone trying to bend some fence wire with one and the pliers' jaws bent and stayed bent.

You get hardness with that, which makes the material brittle but resistant to grinding damage. You need toughness (???) so the metal can withstand hits and monentum based stresses, most tools like that are forged as far as I know.

I make knives and wood working tools. You must anneal, harden, and temper. The hardening and tempering is where you determine how brittle/ductile the metal will be. Determining is done by temperate and timing of quenching/air cooling depending on what you are doing. You can tell the temperature by the color the metal turns. The type of tool and its uses will determine what color/temper you want it to be. If you are striking it or bashing it into things you want it to be softer than a pocket knife which needs to be much harder so the edge will last. A camp knife wouldn't be as hard as a pocket knife, but much harder than an axe or hatchet. That's because a camp knife does more jobs than simply slicing.

Ironically, my father has a couple of those Fiskars axes. He's had them for years and they've probably split thousands of logs without any problems. I still prefer a traditional splitting maul or axe but for a beater axe requiring minimum maintenance, you could do worse. One sits out by the fire-pit for campfire wood year round and isn't bothered by sun, rain, snow, ice, etc.

Its just when I've watch a few of those videos its always someone using a saw cut log with a saw cut baton to "baton" (split) smaller saw cut logs in what looks like their backyard. What forest is made of large pre-sawcut tree sections?

after years (decades) of using a wood handled one my father (60) bought a fiskars splitting axe and it's superior in every respect and didn't fail neither me nor my dad in almost ten years we've had the one. The steel is too soft for my liking giving that I split by hand large amounts of wood each season (five-six large tractor trailers or whatever you call those in english) but it's a non issue basically.

I don't have any use for a tool that's only good to be looked at. If your heirloom axes saw any use at all they probably went through many a handle and axe heads as well, so they are likely less old than you might think, unless, like I said earlier, they saw no use at all.

Except the handle on a Fiskars will outlive you unless you're a massive moron trying to break it on purpose - and even then it's way harder to do than literally any wood handle. Broke dozens of wood handles using them as int intended, whereas in order to snap a Fiskars handle you likely need a press and a chain hoist or a jack likely
