Oh nice, the perfect thread. I forced myself out of my usual eat-sleep-work-youtube routine and I, too, am camping alone. It's quite nice. Set up camp after a hike, find the river, made mushroom soup for dinner. Getting dark now, how do I stop every noise from sounding like footsteps?

Why would they? There's no food and realistically no better shelter or nesting. Mice leave farmer's fields in the fall and winter and stay between floorboards and in walls, but why would they leave their nests in the spring for a random plastic thing?

There's $25 3-person ozark trail tents you can buy. It's not really that big and it'll be cramped with 3 people but you can store your gear inside instead. It'll last until you decide to spend your shekels on a different/more expensive tent

You could also get a bivy sack instead and stick with the tarp setup. Check out the MLD bug bivy, if that's too much, maybe an Outdoor Research bug bivy. Stay away from cheap shit. Cheap often doesn't mix well with camping. There are some exceptions though.

Have you ever actually camped in a floors shelter? I had similar concerns until I just nutted up and did it. Four camp outs later, still no ticks. Yeah, it probably depends on the environment, but I typically camp in dense pine forests and I only ever get crickets jumping on me in my sleep. Got a snugpak jungle bag and it's no longer an issue.

If your pack can't take a sleeping bag inside and the tent strapped to the top, it isn't a real pack. I've used what he's talking about, perfectly livable and no creepy crawlie issues. Less likely to be freaked about the skinwalkers also with the space buffer

That tarp weighs less than a pound and the plastic floor even less than that. The tarp won't break (easily) and can be pitched to whatever you need or want. There's a reason so many campers have abandoned traditional walmart tents ijs. Dude just needs a bivy or net, I guess.
