How important is 4 wheel drive to an adventure van?
I cant find one thats not wau overpriced and beat to shit.
Two wheel drive vans are everywhere for cheap.
How much am i giving up if i cheap out?
I like to camp on BLM land as far away from people as i can get.

It depends on how adventure you're going. The only time it'll be required is when your other two wheels are not able to give you any power... they're in the air for example and you cannot track up. Obviously that's not a novice place you should be driving as you're a novice if you're asking the question. Like previously stated your skill can make up for it but there are times when any amount of skill will not let you overcome an obstacle. That being said make sure you have tow hooks to be pulled out at a bare minimum. The terrain is going to be the deciding factor if you need 4 wheel. When you're in doubt turn the truck off and walk the terrain to determine a plan of action or route to take.

Old VW buses have reduction gears in the hubs, you can trim the sheet metal and run oversize tires. Aired down with good rubber and some camping gear for ballast you can get up some pretty gnarly roads. I say "up" because you'd be a fool to descend into a dicey road without 4wd.

Its pretty critical, especially when you have low range 4WD. But if you're a poorfag and cant afford a 4WD van my recommendation would be to get a van with good ground clearance & a RWD solid axle (Like a Ford E-series). Then Install a rear lunchbox/Detroit differential locker (can be bought for less than $500 new) and some good off road tires in a slightly larger size(31" or even 33" BFG KO2s would be good, also get them as wide as possible 10.5" at least) and then a portable air compressor to be able to air down your tires off road for even better traction, then once you're back on the pavement you just air them back up. Not even shitting you OP those 3 things right there will get to like 90% of the places a stock open diff 4WD will take you on most BLM trails. I'd even go as far as saying that a Locked rear diff with good tires that have been aired down to the correct PSI will be more capable than an equivalent open diff 4WD with fully aired tires. Off course there are certain obstacles where you just need 4WD and so you just have to know your limits but unless you plan on doing some crazy trails I'd say a rear locker, good tires and proper wiring down will get you almost everywhere you need to go with proper driving & planning.

a good driver in 2wd with a diff lock and good tires is going to get almost as far as anybody with 4wd, very few situations you'd take a camping van are going to require 4wd you mong

4wd is good for getting unstuck, 2wd forces you to not get stuck in the first place

yeah you can, you'll just be digging a lot. I learned to offroad with 2wd and went more places than most people with 4wd. the other guy is right, 4wd kicks the shit out of 2wd but waaaaaay more is possible than most people are willing to do. I've skated across straight dunes aired down with straight street tires and a suspension lift. throw some AT's on, air down, you'll get more places than you'd think.

make sure you have recovery gear and/or someone with 4wd or at least access to someone with 4wd (a popular trail or a CB/HAM radio) if you go somewhere super sketchy

Categorically this is the case. The only thing that a 2wd with a locker is worse at than a 4wd with no locker is steep high traction grades (due to lack of low range) and climbing the front wheels over tall obstacles.

That's just the excuse. The lobby group which convinced Congress to pass this law was funded by Mercedes Benz USA and a coalition of import car dealerships. Four wheel drive is only one factor. Ground clearance, tip angle, wheel base, front entry and rear exit angles, what your equipped with, and who's driving are all things to consider.
Should you get a rug with 4x4? Yes, it's a huge advantage and will make going place easier.

If you have to settle with a 2x invest in a locker and a winch. I had diff lockers in a ford ranger, n unless it was way muddy, I didn’t really have to lock in the hubs. Good thing, cause the front axle (Dana 28) was weak af.

Youre a fucking retard. I can tell you from experience that having awd or 4x4 is worlds apart from having to deal with any fwd or rwd.
I would not recommend anyone to even approach a wet road on fwd or rwd. That stuff is just the bare minimum for getting by.
And most third worlders opt for 4x4.

You do need it on mud sometimes and you definitely need 4wd (and lockers) if you get stuck in a position with two wheels in the air, but everywhere else, 2wd with good tires and good clutch control work just as well. I've been driving a 4wd (samurai) for six years now, including trails and offroad, and the only time I actually needed the 4wd was when I slid off the road in winter and had to get out of a snow-filled ditch.

What you definitely need is a manual though. automatic sucks for offroading - modern computer conttrolled automatics kind of work, but with old fashioned automatics, you'll end up spinning tires all the time.

Your samurai is so light and has such a short wheelbase, that it will do pretty well in 2wd.
A full sized van with a much longer wheelbase is a very different story.
I am also guessing that you are not very familiar with more challenging terrain or things like sand.

Please tell me you're trolling or at least forgot to write "dirt road" instead of "road". Not only do trillions of people drive their fwds on wet roads just fine every day, engaging 4wd on a egular road with any 2+2 will kill the transfer gear (or the hubs, depending on what gives first) due to the different axle speeds. Of course, things are different if you drive a meme 4x4 onewheeldrive with a middle differential, but those are crap offroad.

I've got the longbody samurai. it's about as long as a 110 defender or an average van. Driving a fullsize cargotruck might be different, but driving a van or pickup isn't.

Depends on what you consider "challenging terrain". I usually stick to the easiest route I can see - but doing anything else would just be asking to get stuck. The trails I usually drive on are loggers paths, which are usually soft earth or sand and full of holes and grooves from the tractors the loggers drive there, + short distances completely offroad when pulling out wood. Those are about the harshest trails you'll see outside of desert and swamp and more than an "adventure van" will ever need.

I spend a lot of time off road. I always try to make it without going into 4wd. After years of this i can pretty well tell where the line between 2wd and 4wd is.
If you never push it, you will never understand this like.
There are so many washouts where i drive that you cant cross without 4wd.
Out west there are so many places you cant get to in 2wd.
Of course most of these are not on any map.

The most important benefit with 4wd apart from the obvious getting stuck less is safety on steep slippery tracks. If you're taking it easy along or down a slope in 2wd and your drive wheels slip, you can be quickly out of control heading for the bottom. Having all 4 wheels connected to the drivetrain means they are all braked by the engine and all have to slip at once for you to lose it. Something to keep in mind if you are planning to take it on hills.

So explain why my tractor has a feature to jump automatically into 4wd when I touch the brakes dickhead. My day to day work is driving a quad bike and a tractor through a hilly farm. A 2wd tractor would be a death trap on the slopes I drive on every day.

I've been off-roading in Nevada for a decade with a 4x4 Tacoma. To get to camping spots you genuinely don't need 4x4. Every camping spot I ever been to could be gotten to in 2wd with an open diff and 31" all terrains. 4x4 is for exploring 4x4 trails and when you hit snow for the most part

My dad used to get us into some pretty remote spots of the Mt Hood national forest with a beat to shit 2wd Volkswagen bus. I have gotten my family up some pretty fucked up logging roads in a Nissan Quest with barely any ground clearance. Unless you are making your own trails or doing some serious rock crawling, the skill of the driver is far more important than the equipment he uses.
