Small tribal groups are an extended family... and if you're not related to someone, they are married to your cousin or something. Also in tribes everyone is brought up believing in the same thing, really cuts down on the arguments. This is the most stable configuration of human society.
Hippy communes are the opposite of this. Unrelated people with their own ideas about the way things should be, all living together is a a recipe for conflict, which is why most communes since the 60's have failed. It only really works when you have one supreme leader, aka a dictatorship.
Instead of joining a commune, buy property in a small rural like minded village, with nice property dividing lines. Plenty of places like this where everyone goes to the same church, although you may find it hard to break into social circles even if you attend the same church.
