I'm planning a 5 day trip to the Upper Peninsula mid June. I plan to explore Procupine Mountains, Copper Harbor, Pictured Rocks.
I plan to sleep in the car, go for long hikes, scenic drives.
What else can folks recommend I check out, or do? What kind of weather am I to expect? Any special gear I should bring?

bring bug spray. lots of it. the black flies aren't deterred by off! brand so idk what to recommend if the flies are bad at that time of year. its been cold so maybe the bugs won't be atrocious.

Miners Castle is kinda cool if you can deal with all the towel head and chink tourists. i have a cabin just east of there probably 20 miles.

never really done much at the other two spots so i cant recommend anything

Its honestly better to be a high end gear collector who never has time to actually camp(because of job constraints or just living in too big a city , far from the forest) than a GD car camper.

This time of year it will probably be on the cool side meaning long pants...which will help with the bugs. You will be near lake superior which will also cool things off.
But, i have sweated my bag off in the up before so if you don't like the weather, wait a few minutes. Also, check the forecast like a sensible adult.

Plenty of streams etc so plan for that. Wisconsin is soaked right now and i expect the up isn't much better. The snow is probably mostly gone by now.

Good breweries in marquette should you pass through there.

As far as pictured rocks, you could spend a lot of the week there. I hiked two chunks of the lakeshore trail...the chapel to mosquito loop was good.

There is a good Falcon guide on hiking the up by hansen and pelky...look on amazon.

Nothing really starts popping off here culture wise till end of June. I recommend Going to see Bishop Baraga also, nice drive and very pleasant local. I live in Marquette county, its nice tourist trap pretty much. Enjoy the blackflies

I work as a trail guide at PR and I carry around a .45 lc revolver. Black bears have been so desensitized due to the unholy amount of Chinese tourist that im surprised their hasn't been a mauling yet.
Buy your own gun, a good revolver or semi is sub 500$ nowadays.

I have never had anyone bother me about having a gun and I sometimes take a fal with me for memes. Just get a shitton of bug spray, black fly season is upon us.

Forgot to add if you do go to PR avoid beaver basin. I have had most of my bear experiences near the southern part of that trail and there is terrible mosquitoes and flies.

I camped at Little Beaver Lake two nights and had no trouble, saw no sign of bears, etc. This little rascal gave me quite a fright but thankfully he scampered off before I had to whip out my personal defense S&W 500.

Really? I have a cabin near there and have only ever seen one bear up there in the past 10 years, and that was SE of there down by Gemini Lake.
I've seen beavers as big as small bears on Beaver Lake. Also when I beached the boat at the NE corner of the lake to take a piss there were quite a lot of wolf tracks. Never seen a bear though

Grand Island, over by Munising, is pretty nice - though it's been a long time since I've been there, so that opinion is a bit dated.

There's a 20 mile or so loop around the island, and the breeze off the lake keeps everything nice and cool. Only problem is that you need to take a ferry to get out there, so you do need to do a bit of planning to make sure you don't miss it.

Thanks. I have guns. They are rifles, and in not trying to hike with my Mosin. I have a 38, but that ain't gonna do shit against a bear. My buddy has a 10mm he got just for bears that I wanna borrow.

Not backing down no matter how much I yell and stand my ground. Only a gunshot made them run and even then I felt that the bear might still be following me. That and the campsite by trappers lake I had a bear stalk around my campsite run off then come back later than run off after I yell than come back.
Im a guide for a nature center btw so I have like 8 kids with me minimum during these encounters. (fun times ill tell you)
Im pretty sure the bears are desensitized due to the campsites being really near roads and lazy campers not taking out their trash or feeding the bears.

PR and the porks are my go too. If you are near whitefish the shipwreck museum is fantastic.

While on the topic of UP anyone have any experience with the forest and trails around Michigan Tech? I’m going in the fall and I hear there’s over 4000 acres of uni-owned forest but i hadn’t heard of the bug problem til just now.

I go to Tech myself and I'm pretty satisfied with the /out/ opportunities. Join the OAC or talk to someone from the club, they can tell you loads about where to go and what to do. Bugs are pretty bad if you don't bring spray. If you do bring spray, you should be fine. Also may wanna consider a face net if on a hike where it might rain. Mosquitos come out in droves right after it stops raining

Houghton is beautiful. If you're adventurous I'd recommend driving up to the Keewanaw Rocket range (4WD and ground clearance MUST) Our 2017 Crosstrek was BARELY enough for those trails.

Definitely go to Copper Harbor. Drive through Houghton and the Keweenaw Peninsula. Lots of really nice spots out there. If you go in August there are loads of blueberries and thimbleberries (basically small, really delicate raspberries that make GOAT tier jam) to pick.

Cudighi is a slightly different take on Italian sausage with a little pizza sauce, cheese, maybe some vegetables, served on a good roll. It's mostly a UP thing; several of the pasty shops also serve cudighi. I got one at a bar in Green Bay, WI and it wasn't quite the same but still pretty nice.
