Also, I have similar problems. I mostly just suck it up, and stop rushing myself. I'll throw what people recommend for the weather, and get nothing.
Last time I went fishing, I caught my first ever catfish. I was fishing for bluegill. A 14-inch channel cat took the lure at the end of a whippy UL setup and 4lb test mono. It was a fun fight.
So I put that rod down, and started fishing for catfish with my heavier setup. I caught nothing.
It takes time. The hard part is doing something wrong, until you find you're doing something right. That's when you start really learning.
See, when adults like us start fishing, quite alone, it's a tougher road. People can suggest lures and rigs all day long. But it doesn't mean shit without all the experience behind that advice as well.
If you fish with a buddy, they can tell you to slow that T-rigged creature bait on the bottom, or that you'd be better off with a top water, and tell you why they'd make that choice. Or they can give you a hard time while they catch fish and you don't, but you can watch and learn.
I still fish alone. But I'm making progress.
