Aside from "not interested in the city", it does not require "money" to get to the San Juan Islands. I lived on SJI briefly in a tent behind a harbor, and had my van with me via the several daily ferries. You don't need to be "sea planed" in like some His channel episode. Shit, one time I was going "into town" for a run down to Sea Tac to pick someone up at the airport, and when I got off the ferry there was a hitch hiker coming off with me. I picked him up, he'd been around Athens in Ga before he said. I had a couple of hours to kill before the airport, so he took me to this kick ass used book store in...shit, Portland I think it was. Neither of us had shit in life, yet there we were, /out/ on San Juan Island.
Now, granted, plan your trip by ferry times, but you can drive up, cross early, see if you can catch some Orcas from Lime Kiln, drive the whole island a couple times, then get back across the last ferry. But if you miss that ferry, tough shit whatever else you had going on, see ya in the mornin'!
