What's your best/most expensive/important piece of gear/clothing? I'm not asking about your supertrailShillmaster(tm) brand, I mean you can specify but I'm more interest in knowing if it's your backpack, shoes, tent, knife, gps, fishing rod etc.

For camping/hiking, it's definitely my tent, which was a gift, most of the rest of my gear is cheapest tolerable quality. For fishing it's my trolling motor and networked fish finder (my boat is now self driving), even if my outboard was more money and I have a couple Gucci rods. My gucciest hunting related gear is my Kimber Warrior/Gemtec GM45 combo. I don't know if that literally counts because I didn't buy it for hunting, but I did kill a deer with it back in November.

Don't want to make a new thread for this so i'll ask it here.
I'm a complete newfriend when it comes to hiking, i'm excited to go on my first hike tomorrow. I have stuff like water, protein snacks, a first aid kit, sunscreen, and a bandanna i'll wear behind my hat to keep the sun off the back of my neck. I have a small shitty folding knife as well. Will a knife be all I need on a trail? I am nogunz, but I was thinking about getting a hatchet or a small kukri or something to defend myself. Am I being a paranoid retard or should I get something I can use to defend myself?

If you're going on a trail at a state parking lot then you're like a mile from civilization at any point in time. You'll be fine. Unless you're planning to set up camp and start a fire (which you probably can't do anyway since you're probably in a park), you really don't need a knife. Hell you really don't need anything other than some water and snacks quite honestly. Trail hiking is baby mode.

most expensive: a pair of lowa camp boots. After wearing out my third pair of renegades I figured getting resoleable boots might be cheaper. Those boots aren't worth it though - they're a pain to walk in for the first 1 or 2 km until they're warmed up due to the toecap and after less than a year (and less than 500km) the rubber is already starting to tear at the heel.

most important: my folding knife, specifically a victorinoy trailmaster. mostly the locking blade and the saw. While I do have a mora and a proper folding saw, I don't always bring them, and that little folder can replace them for most tasks.

Why not? In every country I've been to so far (germany, ireland, UK), bringing knives into an airport or aboard a plane was fine as long as those knives either didn't lock open or were below a certain length (6cm for germany, not sure about the other countries atm). Are there actually countries where people are scared of knifes?

Im with this guy, a knife is not super useful, comparatively. Faggots got triggered hard by having their paper thin sense of masculinity/worth rocked.

Honestly besides the obvious ones like a tent, water pump/filter or sleeping bag, I've loved my little gas stove. It weights a lot but it beats fucking around with esbit cubes and dealing with the constant piss smell they give off and its amazing to be able to boil some water quickly when you're tired after a long day.

Even though I can carry a 10cm knife without needing a reason whatsoever (as long as it's not double edged or a switchblade) I often feel compeled to not do so, not only because it's frowned upon by most people in urban settings, but essentially because on the tiny chance of you getting caught on a police roadstop, they'll use it as an excuse to harass and infringe on your rights.

Pretty comfy. Sun is always shinning, safe and if you enjoy the ocean then the /out/ is decent. No wildcamping allowed an not too many woods left, specially public.
The economy is not great but a stable job allows you to have a good life since it's still rather cheap to live here.
The real downsides are the crazy amount of corruption local and country wide on the higher levels of government, corporations and finance and shitty public services, national healthcare is far from great and clearly overstretched, public education is going down the shitter too. Lots of bureaucracy too.
Immigration from former colonies, specially Brazil is through the roof. It's also easy as fuck to acquire citizenship, quite pathetic actually. Not many ragheads tho, probably the lowest of the entire western part of the continent.

All in all 7/10 that could easily be 9/10 if not for the corruption and left tendencies of the big part of the population.

I feel ya, not only that but we also have a huge problem with wild fires during summertime so fire bans are often in place, and it applies to private property too. Also most of the tree cover is fucking eucalyptus, due both to its invasive properties and the paper industry love of it since it grows fast. Forests in Spain are far better managed.
We have a couple /out/ gems but the best one is only like 700 square kms

Yeah, by car is the best but there's some bus options. During July/August they get swarmed by people, both locals and foreigners with RVs, but just like everywhere else, as soon as you leave the popular spots you can still find some relative solitude and seclusion.

1. sleeping bag - you need to stay warm at night
2. tarp or tent - you need to stay dry at night
3. sleeping pad - this helps insulate you from the cold ground, although slightly less critical than the sleeping bag, depending on the terrain and season
4. backpack - transport your gear with you

In that order. Everything else is secondary, so don't fuck up your gear purchases for those four items.

Obviously, you need to hydrate, navigate, start fires, etc. when in the outdoors, but you can literally use anything as a water bottle, you can substitute a compass with a trail or intimate knowledge of the terrain, you can go without a fire if you have a good sleeping bag. You can go camping without using a knife. It's possible to hike barefoot, naked, etc. You just can't sleep like that.

My most important piece of gear would be my boonie hat. The sun fucks me up pretty badly and I start getting headaches when I'm exposed to direct sunshine, so some kind of head protection is a must for me. My boonie hat is just my favorite one.
