Searched the catalog and found no train hopping thread, so I figured I'd start one.

Stories? Thoughts? Anything?

Also: I'm going to hang out in the woods tomorrow where freight gets sidelined and wait for a chance to hop on one heading west. I'll probably going to have to go through a yard in Palmdale/Lancaster, CA (not the best place in the world) to get to where I want to go. Anyone been through that area?

I'm not sure what you mean, but there are both legal and physical dangers. More physical than legal, though.
The worst that can happen legally as long as you aren't dumb is a trespassing ticket and maybe being cited for vagrancy, I believe.

I don't think you'd even spend more than a night in jail, if that. And vagrants wouldn't really be a problem as you'd be in a train car by yourself. I wouldn't ride with anyone I didn't know.

yes, the possibility of getting a night in jail or bullshit tickets is pretty high.

Apparently if you never go back there you don't have to pay it, but it'll be outstanding on your record in that state forever, so you may get arrested if you go through that state ever again in your life.

Update from OP:
Bought a SPV rail atlas for my area to supplement my Delorme, and got a new sleeping bag since my old one gave up the ghost.
Been experimenting with ways to pack my pack, weeding out things I don't need, etc.
It's exciting.

Im willing to admit it's mostly just clashing with the romantic view of trainhopping in my head that makes me say it but do actual train kids carry all that shit? I can't imagine they'd have the money for it, you could put down roots somewhere for the same sort of cash people are spending to go trainhop.

Also I've seen youtube videos of riders being arrested who were carrying far more than what I listed, and or similar loadouts.
I just want to be comfortable and able to survive if I get sidelined out in the boonies or get left behind or whatever.
I'd rather my experience be unromantic but still fun then it be TRAYNECORE HOBO LYF333 and end up dead or with no legs.

I don't plan on really interacting with the "locals". I'm certainly not going to ride with anyone I don't know, and will try my best to stay out of the way of others. Dirtying my shit and myself up is also on my list of things to do. I don't really think people will be a problem for me. Offer them some smokes, trade stories, avoid the clear mental cases, etc.

You'd be fucked until you got to a phone and called someone who could help you, or sorted things out yourself. But that's part of the fun.

As far as I know, there are a lot of people doing this, and if you're on a train car with a bunch of people drinking and you refuse, they're probably not going to just take that shit lightly. Crust punks hate the casual trainriding tourists more than anything and nothing makes you stand out like not drinking. You're free to refuse heroin, but drinking is basically a requirement for doing this.

You'll probably see San Francisco Scum Fucks/SFSF are the only ones you kinda have to watch out for, they're on the west coast mostly though. I forget what colors they wear or if they even wear colors but you'll probably notice them.

The older one, the FTRA, are pretty small now and not as violent as they were 40 years ago, but just don't wear a black bandana and follow common sense and don't run your mouth to people about anything and you'll be fine. They're mostly in the east. I've heard the SFSF have a kill on sight order for the FTRA but I don't know how much that goes on or if it's even real, but you should be fine.

Don't try to jump on a moving train, don't talk shit to people, you'll probably be alright. Some people bring cameras around with them and keep online photo profiles of their train escapades. I don't have any saved but you might be able to find some if you look around.

Also, a lot of train kids wear carhartt overalls and swear by them. You have to patch them sometimes with leather but they'll last you a while. If you know how to trap or hunt small game, you can get them pretty easily near train tracks and they go deaf from the trains riding by.

I'm dumb and realized I can fit all my shit in my Camelbak hawg and cut a few pounds of pack weight + lots of cumbersome straps and shit.
Departure date set for about August 10th, possible destination being the golden trout wilderness and then Oregon.
