I would definitely do a lot of things differently, and have way less bosses in between then and now, than I did, but there still weren't that many, really. I guess the longest stretch with a boss ever was 2010-2014 (two different bosses). The Great Recession had taken my own business away in late 2008 (this was not the "tech" thing mentioned above, which was 2001 to 2003 or so). I had saved enough cash reserves to withstand more common blows and luls, but my business shut off like a tap the moment the news started going "oh shit". On those reserves, I was able to make it through the rest of 08, all of 09, and part of 2010 before having to resort to having a fucking boss again. It all wound up culminating in divorce by 2013, so no longer being directly beholden to the demands of a wife, I immediately put in my two week notice and returned to the "fuck bosses" life. I had a few call me up after divorce asking me to come work for them at some new business they had gone into, and I told each of them "I learned to eat earthworms, dig roots, make fish traps, and primitive smoke venison and bear so that I can permanently tell all 'bosses' to kiss my ass."
