Other than that the freedom is great...no one to fuck up your itinerary, no one to stop you from checking out over that next hill, etc.
I do a lot of (car) camping and hiking by myself and it's fine. I do enjoy meeting the *occasional* person and I've actually gotten some great advice from total strangers...but I don't need to hike in packs or whatever. Do remember that half a mile off the paved road (or whatever) cuts down the traffic tremendously unless it's something like Angel's Landing / waiting line.
If you need to take baby steps, just go to an established campground by yourself. If that works then start moving out to backpacking (you don't have to be 50 miles from civilization to try it, just that you're not spending the night within easy reach of your car). If that's cool, then you can go as far as your legs carry you.
Also remember reading about /out/ is great but it's no actual substitute for going /out/.
