Buds, I want a canoe but I’m broke and have never had one. What’s should I be looking for on Craigslist?

I want to strap it on my suv, fish in lakes, and hold some camping gear.

Mad river makes a nice canoe, but really anything will do for your first, as long as it isnt too big. The larger it is the harder it is to manipulate, also make sure you get a decent paddle, look into polling too, canoes are so fun

You can get cheap ones on Kijiji, they're high demand so a good deal never lasts. I recommend the plastic ones over fiberglass or aluminum, they're heavier but basically indestructible, both aluminum and fiberglass are difficult to repair, I would stay clear unless you know what old fiberglass looks like, if it cracks or delaminates you're fucked. You will be immensely lucky to get a line on one for less than $250

Sick, thank you. Not OP, but I just recently started fishing and am going to be buying either a kayak or a canoe soon. I'm leaning towards a canoe more just because I can load more shit into it including a cooler. But I usually travel pretty light anyways and I'd get out on the water more if it were easy and quick to get the boat onto my car.

How much of a hassle is it to secure a canoe onto the roof of a full sized sedan vs a kayak? Is there even any difference?

The difference is that a kayak will generally be shorter/lower and much lighter than a canoe. Tying one down is pretty much the same. If it's secure, it's secure, and it's fairly easy to do.

Yeah most non garbage ones have storage in the front and/or back that sits in the belly. See the two black lids on the kayaks in pic. But they're not as easy to get into while on the water. You can also strategically load things in the bungie cords that you'll need access to if you're not as worried about getting it wet.

I've never been in a kayak but those in the pictures seem so constricting compared to a canoe. In a canoe you can comfortably put them next to each other for an hour of fishing and eating. A kayak just seems like you want to get out of it and move your legs

Oh don't get me wrong, I 100% prefer canoeing. I can bring my dog, I can be comfortable and I can bring extra shit on trips. The only part of kayaking I like the gotta go fast part. Though I'm sure there's a case for how much fun navigating rapids are, I've just never done it.

this but bigger isn't always bad, this is my buddies canoe, it was pretty loaded down for this trip. Mine is about the same length with an extra 4" on the beam which makes it more stable, holds more shit, but mine is slower and less maneuverable.

get a canoe, fuck around in it, and think what you would like different in your next boat.

Keep your eyes peeled for a radisson canoe. It is aluminum, but my 12' weighs a little over 30 pounds. It is a great fishing canoe. You don't paddle it, you row it. Plus they are pretty wide and stable. Unless you are going into rapids and have rocks, it would be just fine.

When I was helping them do some shit up here in Canada I was offered no less than 6 free canoes in various states of repair. Got a pretty nice fiberglass square stern thing that just needed some reinforcing where the wood had rotted a bit and used it for years.
Every group/chapter whatever seems to have an old shed with a stack of canoes no one uses any more. They'll probably be heavy and might need a little work but I'd bet if you tell them what you're looking for and offer 50$ and will come pick it up someone will bite.

Greetings from /n/ my fellows autists. I just moved to Florida and I am looking to pick up a kayak. I don't want to feed the trolls but this is the only personal watercraft type thread in the catalog atm. I would like to take it on the rivers and use it to go up to some of the springs around me (tampa area) but I would also like to take it out to camp on some of the smaller islands around here. It would be me (200lbs) and my girl (110) and maybe 50lbs of gear max. Been looking at the hobie adventure but that seems like it would suck on the river. heres where I am at right now:

not sure what else I can say. I moved here about 6 months ago and I've been renting almost every weekend. All the ocean guys tell me to get something long, all the river guys say get something short. I'd rather not buy two, is there a do it all? theres a guy down the street selling a double hobie odyssey with two peddle drive things and carbon paddles for 800, is that a good deal?

Canoe vs kayak won't be much difference for mounting, ratchet straps are key. I personally like canoes because I'm not usually covering big waters so speed isn't an issue and when I am I need to carry lots of shit to stay there. I dont sail so I cant give personal experience but I know guys that swear by them.
I met a french canadian guy who took one from fucking halifax to florida . He was a nutter but he did it. He carried camping gear in dry bags strapped to a rack he had fashioned between the hull and outriggers.
