I camped with a guy in mexico for a few days who had one. I was pretty cocky in a jacked up sportsmobile but he was towing that little trailer with a modded rubicon and he could fucking go anywhere.
Seemed like a small sleeping space but he loved it.
So expensive though that he was embarrassed to say what it cost. All the drawers and whatnot were top notch.

americans like to build them from wood, but I don't think that will cut it in Australian conditions, it'll fall apart on the dirt roads we have here. but one made of aluminium would do fine.

Its built like a tank and can handle rock crawling if you are good enough.
That said i have also seen the ausie version and it was fucking mental.
I think it cost 175k american though and was way bigger. Even with all its crazy tech i thing the little one towed by a rubicon would get further off road.
The australian one was just too big and heavy with all the crazy suspension stuff.

Strip built with a single layer of epoxy/fiberglas on both sides is strong as fuck and will not suffer the metal fatigue aluminium will. Not expensive, but a LOT of work.
If you put 3D curvature to all sides like a ships hull it's be even stronger.

Posting what is clearly sub-arctic mountains in cheating. The road salt/gravel mixture dumped every winter and the cycle of freeze/thaw, deepfreeze, freeze/thaw destroy the best made roads in a couple of years. Couple that with the interior of North America routinely getting jungle-levels of rain in the summer mean this road could be less than two years old, if it's in the right(or wrong, really) spot.

What are the good brands for pop-ups these days? I grew up with two different StarCraft models, but it appears the brand has been subsumed by someone else or something.

I'd prefer something smaller. Don't really want the bathroom/shower bits that come on bigger ones, as that's just a maintenance nightmare just waiting to happen.

Some tires have super-solid sidewalls but those all appear to be radials, they'll be ruined even with a 700lb trailer weight on them.

It depends on where you are.

I bought a new steel utility trailer with a title and got a tag no problem. I will build the teardrop on it.

If they come from a manufacturer they are responsible to make it road legal.

If you build one from scrap it depends on local rules.

Some places don't really care, some are fussy.

Bicycle ones are tiny but sturdier than cardboard.

Lots of basic models run 500 - 750 lbs

Most cars can pull 1500 lbs.

I'm considering building an aerodynamic one on a steel undercarriage, with the hull made using the stitch and glue method usually done by hobby boatbuilders. Proobably going to be trying to make it as aerodynamic as it can possibly be.

That's what I don't really get. Trailers are kind of a pain in the ass. It seems like a setup like this has more interior room than one of those small trailers. You could also get a lightweight "backcountry" style popup truck camper for what one of these meme trailers cost.

I camp with and sleep in my wagon sometimes but it's kind of annoying shuffling shit around to sleep at night. You almost need a roof box which adds weight. With a camper setup in the bed you just pull over and hop in the back.

It depends on what you are looking for. Some people want all their equipment to fit in their backpack. Some people want more. While a trailer might be more of a pain in the ass than no trailer, you can fit a lot of stuff in an easily usable space. Teardrop trailers are basically "park and use" while leaving all space in your vehicle available for other equipment. The big thing beyond sleeping space is having a chuckbox that's ready to go on the back of most teardrops.
