Hey /out/, I'm looking to get a new day pack. I'm leaning on the Tarahumara but, I'd like to hear some other suggestions if you have any. I'm willing to spend no more than $150.

Osprey Talon 22 if you want something beefy with good waist straps.

I picked up a Mountain Hardwear Agama for a good daypack I could carry on a plane (Had to retire my old Timberland school bag, lasted me 10 years). Still has a waist strap and a sternum strap. Pretty sure it's been discontinued, though.

I paid about $85 on amazon, it's great

-hydration capable
-sweet frame that keeps the pack off your back for better ventilation

Did a 32 mile day with an Osprey tallon 22. One of the best packs ever.

Stratos 36 if you want slightly bigger.

The only thing that puts me off a little is all the pockets and doodads and straps and stuff, know what I'm saying? I really like the simplicity of the Tarahumara. Than again if I get an Osprey I could get a new water bladder as well. I don't know yet...

If you are doing any type of elevation/uneven terrain the fact you can completely secure it via waist/chest so the weight doesn't shift on you is a godsend.

The straps are compression straps, you pack the pack and then tighten the compression straps, this keeps the load from shifting while you're walking. The talon series is more geared towards cyclists, and the stratos more for hikers.

And the biggest selling point is that if you wreck anything on the pack they will fix it for free. 100% free, no questions asked, even if it's obviously your fault.

protip: osprey hydraulics bladders suck balls. get a platypus big zip.

Noone is going to hate you for not going with an osprey pack, even though they're quite simply the best, but here are the solid requirements for a daypack:

-hydration sleeve
-load lifters
-compression straps
-hipbelt

If a pack doesn't meet those 4 minimum requirements, that's grounds for disqualification.

I used to prefer 2 water bottles as well.

But the bladder holds more, is lighter when it's empty, you don't have to fuss around to get your water bottles (just sip off the hose.) I do carry 1 bottle still, just for measured cooking water (nalgenes have water level gauge on the side)

Dear OP,

Go order yourself a pack from Cold Cold World. These are handmade to order packs (in the US) that are very durable, reasonably priced, and customizable with little/no charge. You'd probably do well with the Valdez (40L) or smaller, $115, pic related.

I've always felt that 30L was about the right size for a daypack. Less if you live in a dry area. I've been using a MEC Genie pack for years. It's mostly designed for ski touring, but I've used it for multi-night ultralight hikes and sport cragging.

This Rucksack has also a chest and a waist belt. But the really useful thing are the Shoulder Harness Load Lifter Straps. With them you can shift the weight from the shoulders down to the hips and back.

Not OP, but would also like daypack recommendations. Are there any modern daypacks which are top-loading and use a drawstring instead of zippers? I have pic related but the waist belt is a joke.

Best thing about the Marmot Kompressor is that it folds into its own top compartment if you remove the back-plate... it's very compact, so you can carry it along in a bigger backpack and only take it out when you can leave the big pack behind, but still need something to carry some essentials.

Downside: I've managed to break the zipper within three months, but again, no questions asked, had a brand new pack 7 days later. (Which actually kind of bugged me, they really should've fixed the zipper on the old one, sending a new one seems quite wastefull - and tells quite a lot about the actual production costs)

Marmot Kompressor has a draw string for the main compartment... no waist belt in the bog-standard version, though. But of course, these aren't really necessary for an 18 litre pack.

MEDIUM ALICE PACK, don't waste all that money on an expensive HPG or something - likewise, don't spend 10 dollars less on some gay Italian surplus shit and get a bag 20x worse than an Alice. The large is WAY too big for a day pack, but the medium can function as a day pack, or even be used for a 1000+ mile walk if you know what you're doing (READ: research and practice how to be 'ultralight'.)

However, I recommend a Medium Alice as well.

For 3-7 days, I can still fit what I need on the pack. For 7+ days, I throw the frame on. For anything under a few days, the medium does fine with no frame, as it doesn't have much in it.
