I've just come back from a camping trip to cortina d'ampezzo and i can only recommend that place, there are some pretty neat hiking routes around that area, also east of cortina there are some scenic mountain roads

italianon from treviso reporting in. I usually get out in the mt Grappa group, prealpi trevigiane, dolomiti bellunesi and sometimes dolomiti. Camping is prohibited basically everywhere but there are many huts and bivuacs around. you can also stealth camp, its quite easy if you select your spot and dont light open fires etc

Cool pics, did you ever have trouble stealth camping in Dolomites? I am going climbing in Dolomites next monday and would stealth camp somewhere around Cortina for a day since accommodation is too expensive for me. Will it be ok considering I won't light any fire nor throw trash around?

It was a paid camp I think it was called international camping olympia, one night for me plus my car was 21 euros, would've liked to wild camp but since i didn't have that much time because of work i had to get around by car.

nah, its easy. you pitch the tent at sunset, away from any big trail and out of sight from any hut/city/trail. dont scream, dont light any fire, use as little light as possible, dont litter, wake up early and pack everything before having breakfast. if your tent/tarp is not of a bright color its better. above treeline it can be difficult to find a suitable spot

Also consider sleeping in a bivuac (bivacco) (open free hut with fireplace and sometimes bed)

btw cortina its a popular/touristic place so it will be very crowded. stay away from the main trails if you plan to camp

pic related: mount Pomagagnon from col Rosà. both have a nice via ferrata to go up, in the right you see Cortina city

Tip: the wheather pattern in the dolomiti is like: "it will probably rain in the afternoon", so try to go out early in the morning and have some rain jacket with you

Not sure yet - we're discussing it as I type this, we're looking at Col dei Bos, Tre cime, Cinque torri, Vajolet towers...We'll climb monday and tuesday, so we're looking for 3-4 long, secured beginner routes with maximum difficulty of V

Cool. I slept in a bivuac on my way to Marmolada Punta Penia some years ago, but that was in winter. Are bivuacs open and free in summer too? Got any recommendations for a decent bivvy in Dolomites?

if the bivy is next to a proper alpine hut (rifugio CAI usually), when the hut is open you have to pay and you get some services, bed etc. in winter the hut is closed so they keep the bivuac avaible. otherwise its always free.

ah, i dont know that much about rock climbing. maybe i wold avoid 5 torri because its too much turistic, eg people coming from cortina by car/lift with flip flop and so on
