>$10 for backing1: for micro fishing you don't need -any- just use whatever you have on hand
2: you will rarely ever have to replace it because it will rarely ever get used
>$20 for a fly lineconsider the following: a $7 spool of mono is good for a season of use. $21 in 3 years. that fly line? well, let me just put it this way: i have fly lines from 4 years ago that have plenty of life left
i will admit that flies and leader material are expensive, but tieing your own leader saves a bundle (i use berkley trilene, it winds up costing ~ $0.05 USD per leader, i get multiple days per leader, and a set of spools will last for ~120 leaders. basically, if i went fishing 50 times a year, two uses per leader, i have 4 years worth of leader material on hand.
>fliesyes, those are pricey, but consider that each one has to be hand tied individually. you're paying for materials, but a lot of it is time. consider this: that 50 piece fly kit costs 26 cents a fly. in a world of 2-5 dollar flies that sounds pretty solid. it's a big initial investment, i'll be the first to tell you, but once you have it, you have it. i've got an eagle claw fly rod that i was given a decade ago, and passed along to my nephew.
