I personally prefer index and middle. Ring and middle feels like I'm stretching the webbing between my middle finger and index finger too much. But it's as the other dude said, up to your anatomy and body position.

Forgot to mention, pocket depth changes this answer a bit for me. If it's deep, ring and middle feels fine, but if my hand has to be really open I prefer what I said. Still, personal preference and all that. Try making one hand into a circle that mimics the pocket shape and use the other fingers of that hand to get the depth right, then put the hand you wanna use into it and pull in the direction you'll be loading. See what seems to feel the best.

I've been projecting Polish Traverse in NYC for about 3 months now and I have the send in my sights. Will be my first V5 outdoors, although a lot of people say it's more like V6. And I'm using beta that hasn't been used before (according the the videos I've watched online + the opinions of older Rat Rock climbers). Feels good man

Is it a bad idea to try and get into climbing if I want to do it alone? I had a lot of fun at a class I took last week but I didn't realize you need a partner to belay you.

Would just toproping and bouldering feel limiting after a while?

Not at all. Climbing is a sport that is great fun with two and (sometimes) even more fun solo, especially when you start getting /really/ good. When you improve, you can top rope solo certain routes, you can just straight up solo some easy routes (save this for when you are literally at your prime/don't give a fuck), or boulder alone. Yes, there is always risk to climbing alone. No, you will not die if you climb alone (and you are not an idiot).

I wouldn't recommend starting out doing solo. Once you have some experince it might be fine.

If just just want to climb alone and get stronger without the risk, then go bouldering.

Oh shit lad I have like 3 pairs of those pants. I had some Prana zions before that. The $20 Costco ones have held up better for actual climbing and use. I wear them every time I go climb and maybe 4/7 days I work. They are a straight up deal, mine are Eddie Bauer. Not sure if they are the same pant but I am pretty sure. Very good deal.

been spending more time in the bouldering gym due to shitty weather and not enough time to go all the way out for legit climbing, and recently our setters have been using more than a few itty bitty footholds that you gotta really put weight on. i dont mind the balancing part, but when i put my tip on one of these i can feel it through my shoe and my toes fuckin hurt. any advice for standing on footholds that have less than a pad of usable surface?

I have one. Pretty nice, a little sweaty in hot weather. I find the gear loops a little annoying, the upper loops stick up in the air unless weighted with gear, usually means my t-shirt snags on them if I'm just using the harness in the gym. Probably a good reason to get a gym specific harness.

Opinion on PAS? Needed/not needed? Useless bloat? I've learned on sport I can just carry two Alpine slings, slap them on the chains, connect to harness, figure 8 on night through chains, clip a locker to the night and onto my harness and disconnect Alpine draws. Is this the qui neat way to clean? I want to start climbing faster.

That's all you need for sport, works perfectly. For multipitch stuff, particularly rappelling, a PAS is useful, but I just use a double-length sling

I like using a PAS for multi and sport. Easy to use two biners to clip into two bolts with it when setting up for a rappel. For multi pitch stuff I tie in with a clove and have the PAS as a back up.

Not OP, but I would focus my routine around A) endurance and B) Technique.

I would do a couple warmup laps moving up, over, down, and back over to the start. Then I would do a couple drills by piecing together routes that require the use of certain techniques I want to work on and when I'm feeling too pumped to do it well or feel satisfied for the day I would do 2-3 sets of as many laps as I can to burn myself out and work on my endurance.

I'd say: download crimpd, use their workouts. Grab some tape as >>1547104 said to begin marking off areas that work best for what crimpd asks you to do, and work from there. Also, noob gains will be tremendous - use this time to hone in technique and on a slopey, flat wall like that you will be able to learn a lot of good foot technique.

When you're bouldering is it very bad to hold on when you lose your footing/your foot slips? I'm a beginner who's had ridiculous pain in my bicep/elbow and none of my friends have experienced it. Someone at the gym said that it might be due to the sudden jerking of the arm when your foot slips and that seems to happen to me a couple of times each time I climb

Outdoors wise aiming to get to climb HVS/E1 in the next few months, and longish term to climb 7a/E2 comfortably.
I've currently hit my indoors bouldering plateau at V4/5, so I'm trying to get my footwork up to break past them.

Dude the entire reason why indoor bouldering is popular is that you don't need a belay partner to do it.

Caution is advised for solo outdoor bouldering but I've done it. Fuck, sometimes you're actually safer solo bouldering than with shitty spotters who don't do their job.

Both, just a PAS is used for both. Sling is adjustable using knots or clove hitches. Anchor is redundant by connecting the bolts with a quickdraw if they aren't already connected with a chain (most are where I climb). Clip to one bolt, partner clips to the other. Then rig the rappel line.

I wouldn't say it's *very bad*, but I would say it's a chance to work on your footwork. You should not be slipping off as much as it seems like you would be to get that pain in your bicep/elbow. This can be remedied by going slower, not charging like a bull and focusing on where your feet go as well as general body positioning. How do your feet look on the wall?

Depends on the situation and the personal strengths of the climber. It's easy to test which fingers are strongest with a hangboard, obviously only attempt if you've been climbing for a while and given time for your tendons to strengthen.

My ring finger is much stronger than my pointer, so if it's already a strenuous move or a bad pocket then I'll use it but for anything cruisy I use the index because it is more comfortable.

Use this as a general guide. But really the only thing you can do is go try as many on as possible.

I use a pair of finales for all day trad comfort and a pair of katanas for gym climbing. It's nice to have two so you can send a pair off to get resoled.

Gunna start getting into a serious training schedule, gym 3 or 4 times a week, core strength work and hang boarding at home.
I aim to start flirting with 5.12 gym climbing in the next year, and build up my trad leading, hopefully to 5.9/5.10 gunks level, but that remains to be seen.

Did some top rope solo today at a fun collection of little crags near home. Managed to get up this hand/fist jamming crack, pretty mossy and slick, lost a lot of skin, but it was fun.

I just started working at MetroRock in Everett MA. Great community, lots of nice climbers of all levels. I'm able to fight my way up a 5.10d and a V3 on a good day, hoping to break into 5.11s and V4s by the end of the summer.

You will hurt a pulley or tendon, or just be too tired and then decided to take 2 days off, which turns into 3 days, 4 days ... ask me how I know. Develop a good training plan since you have free access to literally everything. Take this time to get wildly yoked and good at technique. Learn about gear. Learn about climbs around you -- people will be asking. Go outside (steal a crash pad if they have them there). Practice knots when you aren't doing shit behind the desk. Brush up on climbing knowledge and lore. Get stoked, know when famous climbers are visiting your area and if they visit your gym, give them a free day pass. Make lots of friends, find lots of partners. Working at a gym is great, if tedious and boring at times. Don't be afraid to tell a kook to get the fuck out of your gym if they are a danger to themselves or others.

Anyone in northern mass or southern Nh? I'm workin on developing this beautiful glacial erratic called haystack Boulder (can find on mp if you search MA). Would love to get some more people out here. Currently there's like 5 v0-v3 routes established, 1 v4 and 1 v5. Working on adding new routes and docs almost daily. It's a fun little shaded spot, definitely not comparable to anything at Pway, but fun enough if you're close by. What I Learned with Cookie Monster, a tale of forgetfulness, stoke and too many logistics. What turned out to be an outing with just yours truly and another friend to do Cookie Monster turned into an epic before we even got on a climb. We invited two people who definitely know what they are doing - done this before, 5.7 should be absolutely no problem. Stoked to get to the top of Mescalito. We get to Pine Creek canyon after waiting for one of the invitees to get off work - putting us about an hour and a half behind our original schedule. Oh well, thats what you do with friends and when you wanna have a little bit of fun I guess. Fast forward, Pine Creek canyon parking lot. We're gathering up the gear, packing up and ready to hoof it as fast as we can to the base. Green rope on a pole, blue rope on my buddies back. Gear is all set in bags, we have water, some food, a couple beers - alright, let's roll! Hour and a half hike in to the base of Cookie Monster. Purple .5 BD C4 at the base of Cookie Monster becomes mine, finders keepers! The sun shines upon on this beautiful day. "Alright, let's flake out the ropes!" Blue rope is flaked - green rope... shit, where's the green rope? My bag is full to the brim with the rack, water, helmets and some food. My other buddy has /his/ rack, microtrax for simul-climbing shenanigans, and some other fuckabouts. Other buddy has my rope on his back and wore his harness in (lightweight baby!) Buddy four has a small backpack on, with minimal gear and ... no rope with him. Oops. After cracking a beer and thinking of something naked, we decide to just stay put and get up /something/ just to look at the stars at night on a rocky ledge. Cat in the Hat pitch 1 was fun, and I got to learn how to do a carabiner block to lower off one rope when you don't have enough rope to middle it. Worked very well, I was super impressed. Some desert bighorn tried to ruffle some bushes next to our descent. A fun night. Long.

Typical climbers, right? We used a biner block (https://dyeclan.com/outdoors101/canyoneering101/?page=biner-block) without the figure-eight to use a 60m to descent 150' off CitH P1. The first person was lowered off on a gri-gri to see if we could reach the bottom. Reached the bottom just fine. We just piled slings on the tagline opposite and opposed and pulled the rope down after. The carabiner side just slides down the descent line, and you can undo the entire system at the bottom and pull the rope. Worked like a charm. I honestly may use it a lot more. This makes the ... third? climb I "have to" go back to based on principle alone. I wonder when I'll ever know what the fuck I'm doing out here... anyways, I'll be grilling at the gym tonight if any Vegas lads want a weiner or burger. 6-11pm, come on and eat!

Yep often happens when I climb hard crimpy stuff, except on my first finger. I'm pretty sure it's because my middle fingertip slightly overlaps my first fingertip, and pulls the flesh away from the side of the nail when I pull on.

Made it up the full 10 pitches of Dark Shadows to top Mescalito in Pine Creek Canyon, Red Rocks. My opinion: don't top Mescalito. The descents suck. It was neat though, there's a little forest up top and the climb was incredible. I really suck at crack climbing, so a few parts were straight up painful.

Use your legs more, hands are there mostly for balance. If you can't do a 5.5 it's probably because you're trying to pull yourself up it and getting exhausted.

A note on crack climbing footwork: angle your heel down when you weight your foot in the crack. This will align the contours of your instep (CD) with the crack, instead of loading it "across the grain" (AB) so to speak, resulting in a painful pressure point.

The false summit on the right side of Mescalito is much comfier than the real summit. The climbing for these last 2 rope lengths was absolute dogshit as well. Skip this, go to the right if you do full 10 pitches and find the rap station over there near Extra Credit (5.10)

Have one. It has a wide waist strap, medium leg loops, double waist buckles (old style, not speed buckles), double belay loop, and 3x gear loops per side. I use it for gym, sport, trad and alpine. I've owned about 5 harnesses in my life, including a MM titan, my custom misty is my favorite.

I've heard that even equipment sold on Amazon can actually be knockoffs, even when sold from the companies store as 2nd party vendors will carry out the sale. There was an issue not long ago where petzl carabiniers were knockoffs, looked exactly the same, but unlikely to have been manufactured to the same standards.

Look for deals on moosejaw, Backcountry, or factory seconds direct from manufacturers websites.

Nope. You probably can't climb a stucco wall without aid, there's just nothing to use for feet or hands. If there are features on the corners, maybe those could be used for climbing, but otherwise you'll just have to take the stairs. Also, this is assuming you have climbing experience. Most buildings don't have very thick features in the first place, even cobblestone or brick, so climbing them as a total beginner would be tough.

Try your local gym instead?

alright guys: socks or no socks? i've heard from old fags that the no socks thing is new and it makes no difference, but then some people swear by not wearing socks saying bare feet allow you to "feel" the footholds.

i've tried both and noticed some non-climbing pro's and con's. with no socks, i have to fuck around getting my sweaty socks back on to wear my approach shoes on the way back to the car. that's a pain in the ass and irritates me, since i never get them on just right and it's always uncomfortable on my baby feet when they get bunched up. if i wear the socks the whole time, i never have to take them off and put them back on, but then sometimes i feel like i might not be getting the full benefit of my shoes. the other issue is that if i go back to no sock climbing, i may need new shoes entirely since my current ones got worn in WITH socks, so getting rid of socks might create some wiggle room.

Mine are a size smaller than my usual and at first i could barely put my bare foot in for more than 5 minutes or so.

So maybe buy your next shoes smaller, if you plan to climb harder routes, but if you don't just do what you want. The point of climbing is to enjoy it in your own way, if you like socks then keep socks, some people even climb completely barefooted.

It's definitely convenient, but also bulky. Generally you're better of using gear you already have anyways like runners, draws, the rope/clove, etc.

Let it heal. Stop climbing so much. You can continue to train your grip but go easy on anything that requires flexing your elbow for a week or two.

You get stronger. It goes away. Swinging when you cut feet isn't bad but you should also try not to cut feet.

If you want to wear socks, check out Lorpen's T2 socks. They have the thickness of basically pantyhose sock except the achilles and balls of your feet for cushion. My choice for getting around the exact problem you're describing.

Looks like a nice do-everything belay device. I've tried the mammut smart and didn't like the actual handling but what it was marketed as was nice. Assisted brake with easy lead feeding and rap capability.

I think I used to get that. Still do sometimes on really hard days. Is it something that only lasts for about an hour after your climb? If so I would keep climbing, this should stop happening as your arms develop.

You can't let go every time your foot slips, and bouldering often demands supporting yourself on hands alone. However if you're really torquing yourself out it's probably best to take the fall. Deathgripping through a falling motion is also a good way to get flappers

Sounds like you suffer from newness, just keep at it. With bouldering, V1 is supposed to be hard for beginners. A lot of gyms soften this up to hook in the casuals but maybe yours is stiffer. If you're doing this outside, V1 is significantly hard for the average person so you should be stoked at doing any of them, really

Does your gym have roped climbs? If so try getting into that, it spreads out the difficulty over many moves, which I think is easier to learn on. It gives you a chance to really work yourself out without just hitting a wall of muscle strain

I feel like it's pretty inefficient to go once or twice a week, getting my forearms fried after 45 mins, then having almost recovered to 100% like 8 hours later. Normally I would expect to be fucked up for way longer, given how much effort I put in

Gym grades are all over the place, so we really have no clue how quickly you're taking to this or how hard a 5.11 is at your gym

My advice is to not obsess over these numbers and just do stuff that's challenging yet smooth, no hangdogging on the rope. You'll have to start from low numbers if you go outside no matter what anyway

Shame, that's the best stuff.

What's happening is that you're frying your tendons more than your muscles. You're getting wiped but you're not feeling much lactic burn. You should be glad that you're able to recover so soon.

Try focusing on your footwork and doing V0s and V1s as smoothly as possible. Don't just do the muscly hanging stuff over and over. When you do try the macho routes, give yourself water and resting time afterwards. If your gym has classes or clinics for technique I really recommend taking advantage.

Your arms will get stronger even with those 45 minute burner sessions though

when i started bouldering i was barely able to do even the shorter V1 problems i worked on, now that i've been going regularly for a little bit im confident in being able to solve most V5 problems with a bit of work. i figured i would test my grip strength to see if it was anything impressive, but to my surprise my grip has barely improved at all.

for me, i didn't really get much stronger at all as i progressed, but my technique improved massively. i was already sort of strong when i started, but being able to apply that strength allowed me to fully realize what my body was capable of if i simply trained mentally.

so as a beginner, you shouldn't worry too much about getting a strong grip or anything like that. focus on using your legs for one: it's easier to stand up than it is to pull up. get into positions where your legs are balanced underneath your center of mass, drive up, and use your arms like ropes with your hands as anchors.

when you feel that tension in your arms that doesn't continue the next day, you're feeling the stress in your connective tissue, not muscles. make sure to stretch well before you climb and you can reduce this.

it will, but not to the degree that lifting does. you're going to get stronger, but you're not going to be working so hard that you feel soreness. that, and soreness isn't always an indicator of an exercise being effective.

it's also good to avoid pulling too much with your arms early on, it's a bad habit that can lead to injury if you aren't careful. i did it a lot from the start and ended up with pretty bad pain in my arms from imbalances. better technique, stretching, and push exercise helped fix this, but it could have all been avoided if i simply focused more on footwork than pulling with my arms.

Yes to some degree, but your improvement will stagnate quickly. Look up "progressive overload". It's a basic principle of strength training and muscle building.

Try getting hips in for maximum extension when reaching. Also, I've found I can take advantage of heel hooks, flagging, and dead hanging off of one hand more at this level than previously. Body positioning is important as well as following the "flow" of the route.

I wouldn't use pure bouldering as a means of getting swole as fuck -- but the "lifestyle" bouldering has tends to get you in pretty good shape. Might not get super great leg gains. You won't look very jacked if you are just on the wall and don't do anything else. You will gain some amount of muscle, but just enough to sustain your current level of climbing. Boulderers tend to do other exercises besides climbing itself. Pull-ups, muscle-ups, planks, dips, push-ups and a bunch of hangboard stuff of course.

Look up "progressive overload" if you want to know how to get stronger and build muscles. It requires a constant overload of weight or volume. If you are comfortable at a level then you won't progress anymore.

Climbers in general tend to have muscle imbalances. That's also true for many boulderers. You often see them being hunched over, because they have really strong backs and biceps, but weak chest and shoulders. Their pulling is strong, but their pushing is weak. And legs of course are really weak for many climbers. This is different for climbers who do a decent weight lifting routine.

Very few of those Skeletors are at the top of the climbing world though, it only gets you so far. At some point you can't lose any more weight to progress further. I want to do a few via ferrata tours with some friends and have a question I can't find an answer for after almost an hour of googling around.
I saw things like pic related (edelrid absorber sling) and though sweet, that's a fourth of the price of a via ferrata breaking kit, should do the same job and it might come in handy for normal climbing as well. I've been sportclimbing for some time and would just use a locking carabiner from my stuff with it (and a 60 cm sling with another locking carabiner as static protection when switching) but for some reason these fall breakes come with an "absolutely not for via ferrata" warning. What is the reason behind that? It's rated for a fall factor of two (can't find anything for what via ferrata kits are rated for but you should usually have one of 3-5) and the maximal impact force is 6 kN just as with via ferrata kits.
Are there fallbreakes I can use to build my own via ferrata kit? In the end the finished ones aren't that expensive but I'd like to get something that may be of use for other stuff as well.

The Edelrid sling is tested to be used as one alone, vs the ferrata kit which is tested as both dual and just one sling clipped. If you use two of the Edelrid slings, the impact force would be higher in a fall if 2 of them were clipped, because two slings catching a fall will stretch less than one sling.

The finished kits have two lanyards on a single fall break.
Generally I'm just unsure because I can't find anything for what fall factors via ferrata kits are rated for and because of edelrid specifically saying that you can't use the single lanyard thing for via ferrata. I suspect that they just don't want morons to use it to create a kit on their own and fuck something up but I'm not sure.

Well, it's up to you what your acceptable risk is. If you happen to slip while your static sling and the other sling are clipped, you'll have a higher impact. If you slip between switches, you'll probably be ok, but you don't have a backup if the sling does fail. I've never fallen or seen anyone fall on the few vias I've done, seems like it'd be terrifying.

I'm able to do some cool dynamic moves and climbing at the begining of a session
after 40 mins of climbing I'm 100% unable to do the same dynamic moves/throws and even getting in position to start the climb is becoming impossible due to no more energy/strength/grip

However when I leave the gym I'm not really fried, not really sore

Sounds like a small tear in your muscle. Since you can still use the muscle and you cannot feel any coiled up muscle bumps it is probably not fully torn. Specific care for that kind of injury would happen in the first week after the injury, so that time has passed already.

What you should do now is avoid any heavy load on the muscle until it is healed. Overusing the muscle while it is healing can quickly lead to more injuries which in turn take longer to heal. So take it easy. At the same time don't keep it completely still, using the muscle (to a reasonable degree) helps to avoid it healing together improperly.

Don't stretch it too much either. Light stretching and massages can be done after a week or two after the injury, if you feel like it does not hurt too much. Maybe longer if you keep re-injuring it.

If there remains a noticeable loss of mobility or if it does not get better, see a doctor.

If you have roped climbs at your gym try doing that, those are all about endurance so it could be good training. Some cardio on your off days couldn't hurt either

I've only top roped so far, and really wanted to get into leading. But the idea of bolts breaking does scare me a good deal. And it doesn't help that I live in a coastal area of a third world country where most of the fixed protection are 'homemade' pitons instead of the standard expansion bolt thing. And the routes are really runout because pitons are expensive.
Anyone here ever had a bolt break under them during a fall? Or found one that was too sketchy to trust? What did you do then, bailed or kept going hoping not to fall?

Never had a bolt break but I have clipped/ run out past pitons I wouldn't want to fall on. If the whole route was those with no other protection, I'd just not do it.
Be especially wary of coastal areas because sea spray can corrode bolts.

I got my first v4 in the gym and went outside to the pit for the first time last week! I didn't lead but I top-roped Mr. Slate and the one 2 bolts left of it without too much trouble. think theyre a 10b and c. SO Hyped!!!! Gonna head to Jack's Canyon in the next few weeks and work on leading outdoors.

My gym membership just expired and I've been saving for a 10.2mm rope 70m for only $120 at the hiking shack near me. Should I renew my membership or get a rope or get more draws? I only have 1 to practice clipping. I've been using friends' gear and together they have 3 ropes and 2 sets of draws. I would love to have my own rope to lead with other people in the gym though
