You know the worst part is, that kit in your picture is probably one of the best one's I've ever seen, because it includes two pathetically cheap but very useful items most kits don't - a fucking cable saw and a god-damned emergency foil blanket. Of all the survival items you could cram into a minimal footprint kit, the emergency blanket is #1 - those fucking things actually work, and they can make the difference between survival and death by exposure. And yet 90% of those damn kits don't have one, either.
A minimal footprint kit isn't hard to make; the biggest/best knife you can get into it, an emergency blanket (and/or emergency polyurethane bivvy bag for a double layer,) high-test fishing line for cordage, signal mirror/whistle and fire-
