If it's spicy, it's poisonous.
If it's bitter, it might not be poisonous but it's not tasty and therefore you should avoid.
If it grows on a conifer, it's poisonous.
If it grows on eucalyptus, it's poisonous.
If it grows on shit, it might not be poisonous but you're not going to seriously eat shit shrooms... are you?
If it's smaller than a thumb, don't eat it (because it's either not worth the effort harvesting them for any culinary gain or it's usually poisonous).
And then read about russulas, chanterelles, oysters, and portabellos + bracket-types and turkey tails.
A pretty poor rule of thumb I have (with plants, I've never tried this with mushrooms) is chewing on a tiny bit of the plant and spitting it out, waiting five minutes to see if your mouth salivates or foams up. Foaming indicates toxicity. I don't think that would work with fungi so just look up fungi in your region of the world and become familiar with them.
