>>1546705I live in good old east Texas and I can offer only these tips from my own experience.
First, I only do tentless camping for times when I am expecting to do a single overnight camp. Anything longer than that, I will use a small tent.
I place importance on good campsite selection. Try to pick a spot that's relatively grass free and clear of debris. Also look carefully for any places that look like water pools and avoid those.
Check around for animal droppings. Avoid any spots that have it as the scat tends to attract pests.
Stay away from large bodies of water and try to avoid overnight camping if there has been a heavy rain. In my experience, the day after a heavy rain tend to make tons of ants come out and become more active on the ground.
Avoid eating/cooking to close to your camp spot.
My general setup is a ground tarp, a poncho shelter, an emergency single use bivy and/or a light bivy liner, and a mosquito net that goes over my head. Also keep plenty of bug repellent with you.
