Need advice for which owl I should attempt to make a box for.

Live in a comfy forest that borders a big farm field in the Midwest.
Would I be more likely to attract
1. Barn Owl
2. Barred Owl
3. Screech Owls
4. Great Horned
Love me birds and would like to get the final piece in my Bird collection by attracting one to best in an owl box.

Haven’t heard any activity Lately. Is playing calls a good idea or bad idea?

sounds like barn owl habitat to me. if there's a comfy creek in the comfy forest that's good for barred owls too

I hit a Great in my truck one night.
Saw the bastard out of the corner of my eye coming in. Couldn't avoid him. Thumped the corner of my fender.
I pulled over, drove back and spent a half hour with a keychain flashlight trying to find him.
Wrapped him up in my jacket and put him on the passenger seat (left the window down incase he regained his senses and wanted to bail in a hurry).
Got home and neighbor had a bonfire so I drove over. Pulled out the poor guy to inspect him in the light and he was a goner.
Bummed me out.
Tallons we're like the size of a finger, this guy was huge (4 foot wingspan at least) and probably could kill coyote if he felt like it.
I would have loved to have stuffed him but since that's like crazy illegal I just gave him a proper burial in my secret garden, with the tricyrtis.

So my vote is for the Great to restore the balance of what my truck took away.

Barred owl calling is my favorite winter activity. You wait until there is a full moon in Feb or so and then snowshoe out into the woods and try to sow a little chaos.

Depends where you are. I'm in rural MA and there's Barred Owls and Great Horned for days.

Definitely a Screech owl. They’re very small and thus aren’t as likely to attack you when it comes to defending their territory. The other owls, especially the Barred owl, can be somewhat infamous for this reason.

Ok, saddle Barn owls seem to be rare in my part of the state. Less than 10 nesting pairs.

So the question is Barred or Screech. I don’t think great horned go for boxes.

Personally, I prefer barred owls because their call is much more of a classic owl call. It'd beautiful. Screech owls just don't sound like owls imo.
