Most areas where people want to do this have high water tables or a lot of rain, neither go well with under ground structures.
Try to do it in the mountains and you hit rock. You're not going to carve up a granite hillside with your John Deere.

Check it out bro. These people were highly adaptive and talented. They acted like a homogeneous group to fight off destructive foreign occupation.

A movie projector can be a small thing, easily transported and maintained. The fact that work began on these tunnels in the 1940s means that by the time of the American occupation they could have been quite sophisticated.

yeah, it's because in lots of places the water table is just a few feet underground, and cave ins are tremendously dangerous.

you need proper ventilation, drainage pumps and supports or you're gonna fucking die. life isn't minecraft.

Water Tables and Inconsistent soil makes digging holes difficult.

Many cities in Asia do this thing where they put a thick layer of rock to discourage digging because it impairs the structural quality of buildings.

I know that if you get up on a hill and dig a large hole and then put logs over it and cover it with dirt, rocks and grass you could in theory build a hovel.

Here is a diagram of what it SHOULD look like.
Of coarse I would avoid building near largely populated areas because people wil; ruin it, think of it like a snow castle, hide it from other people because they could destroy it.
