While my grandpa was in the hospital in the 90's my family drove 40 minutes there and 40 minutes back every day to visit him. I read FM 21-76 for a chunk of the boring driving.

It's a little dated now, especially the parts that tell you about avoiding Commie propaganda. But the survival stuff is still good.

honestly, 10 of the best ID books won't even remotely compare to practical experience with someone who already knows the local flora. look around to see if you can audit a course at your local college or look around for something like a "master naturalist" class. trust me
