Anyone into Canoeing? I'm looking at planning a couple day trip this Fall and wanted to hear what brands are recommended. I'm looking at just a basic coleman 2 person, but would like to hear what else is recommended for "entry-level" canoeing.

i am mr canoehead. on a canoe trip in algonquin park I was hit by lightening while portaging my aluminum canoe which became permanently welded to my head. as a crime fighter I capture criminals by turning around and knocking them over with my canoe. ask me anything.

stay away from the plastic boats, fiberglass is better.
The type of boat you want is going to depend on what kind of tripping you want to do. Get a cheap fiberglass beater off craigslist and tool around in, try other peoples boats it till you figure out what you like and don`t like. Also learn how to patch fiberglass, it could come in very handy on a long trip.

Old Town is the best name in canoeing imho but just have fun.

That canoe in your pic is serviceable for calm waters though. Pad that seat.

Weight of the canoe is something to consider. Most likely risk of injury besides drowning is tweaking your back getting one on top of vehicle.

I would just save up and buy a used metal canoe, it'll last you forever and you'll end up passing it on to your kids if you have any. You can sometimes pick them up for $300 or less depending on your area.

They have certain advantages depending on where you live. If you love to fish it's obviously got more room to store what you catch. And for river camping, you can't really pack a tent on a kayak. With a canoe, you almost don't need a tent.

What I did was rented a handful of different body types and found the one I like the most. I'm currently rocking a 17" Clipper Prospector. It's fiber glass and solid as fuck.
What type of waters are you going to be on for your trip? Do you know how to swim lol?

as stated before, you can pack a lot of shit. A canoe and kayak are very different boats and serve different functions there is also a wide variety of canoe sizes and shapes. Some canoes can be as maneuverable as a kayak but sacrifice load capabilities. on the other hand a kayak would be hard pressed to carry out the function of a canoe.

I use mine for fishing and slow paddling. So that's not so much of a concern. Outside of your pic related (which honestly scares the shit out of me unless I can get to a favorable place on shore in time), plastic is fine with me. At least that tear would be easy enough to fix at home, to take out again for my leisurely purposes.

I love Old Town Discoveries for river boating, but I prefer a boat with a keel (most aluminums) for farting around on a lake unloaded and you can't beat a kevlar meme boat for Lake camp trips with portaging.

it can also happen from repeated wear from landing on a beach or shore, or from bottoming in shallow water. I usually put a bit more glass and resin on mine at the end of each season

I've been building a cedar strip canoe. its been a work in progress for a few years now. it had to be put on pause for 2 years as I was living abroad for school. I'm almost done

pretty fun to build, also frustrating though, and a huge time sink.
